The Heart of England/Peak District

The Peak district is the oldest National Park in the country and boasts beautiful and diverse upland scenery from heather covered moors and gritstone crags, to wooded limestone dales containing clear streams and rivers. However it is also easily reachable from the M1 and a short drive from most of the major cities in the North and Midlands.

The area is ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities including, walking, cycling and rock climbing, all of which are right on your doorstep, making the area suitable for a great holiday at any time of the year.

The village of Eyam is 7 miles from Chatsworth House, the finest private house in England, 9 miles from Castleton with its castle, caves and Blue John, and 7 miles from the famous market town of Bakewell complete with traditional pudding shop! Matlock Bath with its many visitor attractions, and Arkwrights Mill at Cromford are 15 miles away, and Derwent Dam with its historic Dambuster connections is 12 miles away.

During the summer many villages have tradional well dressings, where the wells are decorated with the petals of flowers and seeds pressed onto clay boards to create pictures.

The Peak District is well supplied with pubs, inns and cafes offering good food and drinks

Eyam

Eyam is famously known as the Plague Village, and still contains many reminders of the time in 1665 when the plague spread to the village from London. The villagers imposed a voluntary quarantine to stop the spread of the disease and over half the village including many entire families perished.

A small museum and information centre provide information and details of this time in the villages history.

Many water troughs can be seen around the village, these are from the original public water system dating back many hundred years and beleived to be one of the first public water systems in the country

There is a fine church with an 8th cenury Saxon cross in the churchyard, and a Jacobean Hall owned by the National Trust and open to the public.

The village has an excellent pub/restaurant the Miners Arms, 2 tearooms, a butchers, a post office and other general stores all of which are within 1 km of the cottage.

A short drive or a longer walk (30-45 minutes) away are 2 further pubs The Bulls Head at Foolow; and the Barrel at Bretton, the highest pub in Derbyshire with a view to prove it, both serving excellent fare
