The West Country region
Exmoor National Park is the second smallest National Park at 265 square miles. It is two thirds in Somerset and one third in North Devon bounded on the north side by the Bristol channel. It stretches from North Hill above Minehead westwards to Little Hangman above Combe Martin, a fantastic place for walking.
Exmoor is a stunning area with its heather moors, steep sided combes and spectacular headlands and cliffs. There are many beautiful wooded valleys with clear streams rushing down, perfect homes for dippers. Also many picturesque villages with thatched cottages and welcoming pubs for a drink or meal as well as many places doing a traditional cream tea. Exmoor ponies and red deer can often be seen whilst walking and driving.

"Quaint cottage with fantastic amenities & lots to do"
Shelby is a wonderful little cottage, however, do not be deceived there is plenty sleeping space for 6 guests. Our party consisted of 4 adults and 2 young children (the property does have steep steps inside and out so supervision of children is essential). There was ample room for all of us to sit around the table at meal times or in the lounge in the evening. The owner has thoughtfully filled many bookshelves with Books, DVDs, Board games and information about the area and things to do.
During our stay we were lucky enough to have fantastic weather so we enjoyed the seating at the front and rear of the property and even managed to see Deer in the adjacent woodland from the garden and attic bedroom. Eating in the rear garden is blissful with magnificent views all around. We enjoyed many BBQ's there during our stay with huge burgers, steaks and sausages from the local Butcher.
The kitchen had all the facilities you could wish for, lots of cooking/baking equipment, utensils, pans, cups, dining set and cleaning materials. The washer and dryer were also a great help.
The surrounding area of Porlock and Porlock Weir are simply stunning. The village has lots of shops, tea rooms, pubs and a good sized playground for children. We can personally recommend the food at the Ship Inn which is only a stones throw away from the cottage.
We also traveled to other towns and villages close by which were equally entertaining for the whole family.
Lynmouth & Lynton - connected by the cliff railway. Both breathtaking villages with amazing views and peaceful streets to walk though and grab a drink, something to eat or pick up gifts in the lovely little shops. We also saw the gorge, the memorial museum and took a trip on the cliff railway.
Dunster - we traveled by steam train which was a lovely experience. While there we spent a lot of time exploring the beautiful village and the magnificent Castle before stopping for a delicious meal in the Luttrell Arms.
Minehead - we spent a day on the beach here which was pleasant but very windy which was difficult as the sand is very fine. This is the place to go for grocery shopping as there is a big Tesco and Morrisons. We also caught the train to Dunster from Minehead station which is very nice. The shops on the front are like in most seaside resorts (a bit tacky) but some lovely restaurants and shops can be found if you walk further away from the beach front.
Woolacombe - We spent a few days here as the beach is unbeatable! the children would have gone everyday if we had allowed. Food can be bought on the beach or at many local restaurants and bars. Definitely worth the drive.
Westward Ho! - a lot of investment has been spent in this area with new beach side apartments lining the coast. A nice day out but beware the tide comes in very quickly mid afternoon - as we found out after setting up 10 mins earlier haha!
Ilfracombe - a lovely town with lots of shops, tea rooms and bars. Wonderful views across the harbor.
We also visited Big Sheep Farm and Exmoor Zoo which are both brilliant days out for kids and adults.
Don't miss - Cream teas, Monster Pasties (from the butcher in Porlock), Ice cream at Porlock Weir, Real Ales and Cider in any of the historic local pubs, delicious seafood (at The Rising Sun, Lynmouth).
I hope this is helpful and that you enjoy your time at Shelby as much as we did.
