The West Country region
Porlock is a working village with a good range of shops selling local produce. It has several good pubs and restaurants. It is situated about 45 minutes from Somerset's County town of Taunton and 10 minutes from the Seaside town of Minehead.
There are many pretty villages to explore. Close by are the National Trust owned villages of Selworthy and Bossington with their lime washed thatch cottages, and a picturesque church and village green at Selworthy. A short drive brings you to the village of Dunster with its medieval castle, Yarn Market and working water mill. There are many tea rooms and restaurants within the village.
Situated on the North Devon coast, just twelve miles away, Lynton & Lynmouth are regarded as being 'where Exmoor meets the sea'. Leave the car at home and take an open top bus ride from Porlock to these North Devon towns.
The larger towns of Bridgwater and Barnstable are only 50 minutes away, whilst Exeter can be reached in about an hour and a quarter.
Described as "The Jewel in Exmoor’s Crown", Porlock is a traditional Exmoor village.
It is the perfect base for exploring all that West Somerset and Exmoor has to offer.
Within easy reach there are numerous villages to visit, breathtaking views to see and Exmoor pursuits to experience, including the opportunity to fish, cycle or gallop your way across Exmoor!
You can also enjoy touring the National Trust villages of Selworthy, Bossington, Allerford and Dunster, all within a short drive, all with a good range of pubs, restaurants and tearooms for you to sample.
There is fantastic walking straight from the cottage ... up Hawkcombe to the heart of Exmoor, over Ley Hill to the high point of the moor, Dunkery Beacon, or up to the top of Porlock Hill for views of Hurlestone Point and Bossington Beach. Then within a short drive the remainder of Exmoor is at your feet ... moorland, woodland and beaches!

"Perfect holiday for dogs"
We've been to Tanglewood twice, once last Autumn, when the weather was pretty rainy, but we still liked it enough to go back in May, when the weather was wonderful. It's such a well thought o… More

"Lovely cottage, fabulously peaceful location."
We've just returned from a wonderful week in this cottage, it's located 3/4 mile up from the village of Porlock so well within walking distance, although the walk down to the village is some… More
Thank you for all of your great comments about our cottage, we are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and look forward to seeing you again later in the year. We would however, 'politely' disagree with the comment that 'the kitchen was .. probably due for a deep clean'. We feel that this gives the impression that the kitchen was dirty which it is not. This is borne out by the fact that 'Visit Britain' have given the cottage a 'Gold Award' for the last four seasons, part of which covers the high standard of cleanliness, and the lovely comments in our visitors book by previous guests. We operate a rolling programme of refurbishment and the kitchen is due to be refurbished next winter so it may be a little dated - but we feel the comment is misleading and gives the wrong impression of our cottage.

Many thanks for your lovely comments about 'Tanglewood', we are glad you enjoyed your stay.
With regard to your comment, we would like to point out that the majority of the road that provides access to 'Tanglewood' is tarmaced with the final stretch being a bridleway. The owners of the 6 properties further up the bridleway do not all have '4 x 4's and do not have a problem reaching their houses. We have a Renault Scenic and have not had a problem and one of our regular guests even brings his beloved Morgan sports car on holiday.

"Our views on Tanglewood - Porlock"
I have been going to Porlock for over 40 years and in recent times have stayed in Tanglewood with my wife 6 times (plus daughters and their husbands on 2 seperate occasions) As a family when our children were much younger we used to visit Porlock every year and have stayed in a number of self catering units.
For most of the 40 years I didn't realise that the road in which Tanglewood is located actually existed. That says something about the peace and tranquility which one can experience whilst staying there
Each time we have been in Tanglewood it has been out of season (February and October) and the house is very warm and cosy. We have been there in the rain, wind, snow and fog (Sun also!!) and never felt that the heating wasn't good enough - which can be an issue with some properties
The small conservatory is bright and ideal for reading during the day. Having a glass roof enables full appreciation and benefit to be obtained from the views of the trees around the wooded combe in which Tanglewood sits
The walk into the village is not a problem for us and in fact provides a useful and semi compulsory excercise routine on those lazy days.
Some may find the access road not as smooth as they would like but rest assured I am fussy about how my car is treated and taken in the appropriate gear at the appropriate speed it presents no problem at all and the locals who live in the same road are up and down to the village regularly.
I think having been back to Tanglewood six times really says more than all the words I could write - if we didnt like it we wouldnt have gone back.
