The West Country / Somerset region

Somerset unveils a rustic and wild countryside which is both epic and welcoming, alive with colour. Five hill ranges - three of which are Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The Levels and Moors are a rural idyll where traditional crafts still bind the tapestry of West Country life.

Cradled in the arms of the countryside, towns and villages invite you to seek out their history and heritage. Hidden treasures abound as you make your way across this magical county sampling the delights along the way. A county for all seasons, The Land of the Summer People holds new surprises whenever you visit at whatever time of year.

Exmoor / Wheddon Cross area

Quarme Valley Grange is situated one mile from the historic village of Wheddon Cross. Wheddon Cross is a thriving community with a church, post office, garage/shop, hotel/pub. An all-weather tennis court has just been opened and it is a wonderful centre for walking, cycling, riding and each of the four seasons offer different things for the visitor to see. These include snowdrops, primroses and daffodils in the spring, followed by bluebells and heather in the autumn. Throughout the year you can see the red deer and Exmoor ponies.

The cottage is also close to many favourite tourist attractions and the newly opened Coleridge Way, named after the romantic poet, is a 33 mile horse ride, cycle or walk from The Quantocks to Exmoor which passes through Wheddon Cross. There are also some wonderful circular walks around the village and Dunkery Beacon, the highest point on Exmoor, is only three miles away, and provides an excellent starting point for walking on the moor where you will discover some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. A twenty minute drive will take you to the National Trust's Dunster Castle which rises dramatically above the village of Dunster and set between the woodland hills of Exmoor and the sea – very close to the seaside resort of Minehead. Nearby is the National Trust's Holnicote Estate which covers four miles of coastline between Porlock Bay and Minehead and where the South West Peninsula Coastal Path begins. The cottage is also near to the picturesque villages of Exford and Withypool and to the charming small town of Dulverton with a good selection of small shops.

For a day trip there are many places to visit including the sandy surfing beaches on the North Devon coast at Croyde, Woolacombe and Putsborough, the RHS Rosemore Gardens, the Dartington Glass Factory, National Trust's Arlington Court, Lundy Island and Knightshayes, the cities of Exeter, Plymouth and of course the renowned Eden Project in Cornwall.

Many activities can be enjoyed on Exmoor including horse-riding, cycling, shooting, fishing and playing golf.

How to get there

From the North leave M5 at junction 25 and head for Minehead on the A358. Turn left under the bridge at Cedar Falls Health Farm onto the A3224 signposted to Ralegh's Cross and Wheddon Cross. Stay on this road until you pass the Ralegh's Cross Inn, approx half a mile bear right at the Chapel signposted to Wheddon Cross. The house is within a mile.

Further details indoors:
Part of Quarme Valley Grange, the cottage lies to the right of front door to the main house. The entire property has been completely restored over the past ten years and is in superb condition. The rendered cottage is classically decorated with quality reproduction furniture as is approached through a side door into a lobby area. This leads into a carpeted dining room with lovely views of the moor and with a dining table large enough to seat eight people. The sitting room also enjoys lovely views and is a cosy room with two sofas, chairs and a gas coal-effect fire set in a pretty fireplace making an attractive focal point. There is Sky TV and a DVD player.

The kitchen is fitted with modern units and is well equipped with a two oven range with a gas hob and electric ovens, a dishwasher and fridge/freezer. Next to the kitchen is a very useful utility area with a backdoor to the outside and ideal for placing coats, hats, boots etc. and also has a washing machine plus tumble dryer. There is a room off the kitchen with a sofa-bed and is an ideal playroom/games room.

Upstairs is a pretty landing to sit and read or play games. There are three bedrooms, all named after famous musical composers, two rooms have double beds and the third twin beds (the twin beds can be pushed together to make a Super King size bed and guests can specify if they would prefer a double bed in that room before arrival). These rooms are superb, each with Sky TV and Broadband and each with its own en-suite bathroom with bath, walk-in shower, basin and toilet.

Further details outdoors:
There is nearly an acre of garden overlooking the Quarme Valley with a tree house for viewing wildlife. There is a lawn directly in front of the cottage for relaxing and playing limited ball games. In the less manicured part of the garden is an area for barbeques and also those with small children must note that there are a number of ponds and a stream. There is also ample parking for several cars in the driveway.

Mobile telephones do not tend to work well in the area other than those on the Orange Network. However, there is a land line telephone available and also a fax machine.
