3 miles from Wheddon Cross, deep in the Quarme Valley full of flowers, wildlife and history, a 200-year-old detached stone cottage, smartly converted from a barn with superb long moorland views. Four hundred yards of steep hardcore track lead to it and two other dwellings. Around are 2 acres of grassed grounds for you to wander, bordered by trees, a little stream and wildlife pond (so small children must be supervised). A lovely footpath runs down to the river and beyond to Winsford (good food pub).

Inside, full of light and space. Open-plan living/dining/oak fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, freezer, larder fridge) with terracotta tiled floor, high timber ceiling, woodburner, TV/DVD and glazed doors to large west-facing conservatory (table/chairs, vine) with gorgeous no-one-else-in-the-world views - brilliant for sunsets. Two ground-floor bedrooms – a double, and a single; shower-room (suite with large cubicle). Stairs up to gallery sitting area with two single beds, TV and toys, leading through to a double bedroom (5' bed) with en suite bathroom (suite) and door to steps down to garden. Spring water. Brilliant for the true country lover. Arrival after 4pm.

The West Country region

Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).

Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.

Wheddon Cross: high village (church, PO/shop, pub, snowdrop valley in spring), gateway to Exmoor's most beautiful part, surrounded by beautiful countryside and an abundance of wildlife. Local pony-trekking. Dunkery Beacon (walking, tremendous views over moor and oak valleys to the sea and Wales), 2 miles. Wimbleball Lake (watersports), 6 miles; Dunster and Dulverton (shops, pubs, restaurant), 8. The sea at Blue Anchor or Porlock, 9.
