The West Country / Somerset region

Exmoor is a spectacular national park covering around 266 square miles. The scenery is varied with stream and ancient woodland to open heath. For all outdoor activities you can't really get much better that this.
If you don't want to get too active there's more than enough attractions. Here are just a small number of them:
* Horner is a National Trust village with many thatched cottages, water mill, tea rooms, ancient woods and the trickling Horner Water which form part of a National Nature Reserve which is renowned for red deer, rare lichens and ancient oaks. A walk beside Horner Water on a sunny day is simply magical.
* Allerford is another National Trust village within the Holnicote Estate and has a fifteenth century packhorse bridge over Aller Brook. The West Somerset Rural Life Museum is located in the old thatched school house.
* Culbone sits deep in a shaded valley, famous for having the smallest parish church in England and for inspiring Coleridge's 'Kubla Khan'.
* Doone Country is the area around Badgworthy Water where R.G. Blackmore's novel 'Lorna Doone' was set. Attractions include Oare church which is mentioned in the novel.
* Dunkery Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor at 1705 feet (519m) from where on a clear day up to 13 counties can be seen together with the Bristol Channel and Welsh mountains many miles away.
* Dunster is a medieval village with its Yarn Market, Castle, Priory Church, Tithe Barn, various shops and places to eat.
* Lynton and Lynmouth was once referred to as 'Little Switzerland' and is famous for its spectacular coastal scenery. Lynmouth is linked to Lynton by a water powered cliff railway.
* Watersmeet is where the Hoar Water meets the East Lyn. It is a lovely beauty spot and Site of Special Scientific Interest and has a welcoming tea garden and visitor centre.
* Valley of the Rocks offers spectacular sea cliffs rising to nearly 1000 feet (300m) and is also home to some very agile goats.
* Selworthy is unsurpassed as a chocolate-box village, with its picture postcard green surrounded by thatched cottages, National Trust shop and splendid tearoom. Prominent for all to see is the newly refurbished Selworthy church which stands out as a land mark from miles away.
* Wimbleball Lake was formed by damming the Haddeo and now acts as a reservoir. It is also the home of the South West Lakes Trust Water Sports Centre and offers various water sports activities.
The Exmoor / Porlock area
Porlock is a beautiful coastal village in South West England, situated in a deep hollow on Exmoor. It adjoins a Porlock Ridge and Saltmarsh nature reserve which has now been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
A picturesque, wooded combe called Hawkcombe leads about three miles from the village up to high open moorland. The stream from Hawkcombe runs past an interesting Victorian hunting lodge, called The Cleeve, then underground beneath a hotel in the centre of the village.
The South West Coast Path goes through Porlock, many walkers stopping rather than continuing on the gargantuan walk to Lynton. There is also a Coleridge Way walk.
Culbone church is said to be the smallest church in England. The main structure is 12th century. Services are still held there, despite the lack of road access - it is a two-mile walk from Porlock Weir, and some 3-4 miles from Porlock itself.
A new toll road bypasses the 1-in-4 gradient on Porlock Hill. There is an ancient stone circle on the hill.
The area has links with several Romantic poets, and R. D. Blackmore the author of Lorna Doone.

Guestbook for The Cleeve
? New Year was indeed wonderful and the Cleeve proved to be a great base for the week. MP.
? We very much enjoyed our time there and would certainly recommend it to friends. NO.
New Year 2010/2011.
? Having been to The Cleeve I know how lovely it is - beautiful accommodation, near a nice village for pub meals etc and lovely walking country. J.
Christmas 2010.
? The main comments were: The beds were very comfortable and the linen etc was good quality. The décor was attractive. Ample glass, tableware etc and excellent kitchen facilities, especially the Aga. Boot room was a great benefit in the winter weather. The village was charming and had everything needed in the way of shops (great butcher), pubs, cafes etc. As walkers, we really enjoyed the location and that we had several walks where we could start from the house. Even in winter, there were place to go such as Dunster village and we had a great evening on the Railway Carol train. Excellent fish and chips from the Exmoor food co at Porlock weir. Everyone except me saw the deer that visited the garden in the morning-you have him trained well… AO.

* I just wanted to thank you for having such a wonderful house. Everyone kept saying how great it was. We arrived in the dark so it wasn't until the next morning that we saw the lovely views. Luckily the weather was brilliant as we could make most of them and the area over the weekend... Thanks again and I will certainly recommend The Cleeve. MM.

* Thankyou very much for providing such a fabulous holiday let. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your brilliantly equipped house in a perfect location for family fun. We have all had a wonderful holiday and will be recommending you to anyone who is looking for a large holiday venue, and all four families have felt the holiday was such a success that we may well like to rebook for next year. RT.

* I want to thank you for our most wonderful stay at The Cleeve... The house was absolutely perfect for us (certainly no shortage of beds), and the area is absolutely beautiful. We spent almost every day out walking somewhere in the hills, when we were not catching up on the last 30 years. We loved the decorations in the house... and the kitchen became the focal point of the reunion with the Aga oven and the 4 minute dishwasher. Leaving the house was hard, after a fantastic week, but made a little easier by the person who cleans the house... Thank you for returning the cautionary deposit so quickly... I hope we can take you up- on a future stay.....I would go back in a flash. CB.

* We have never before stayed in a house which provided so ideally for its target clientele- it really is the perfect house party venue. Although a handsome Victorian former hunting lodge, it is stylishly modernised, bright and very fresh. Every comfort and convenience has been carefully considered - plenty of relaxed living space and seating, places to get away in both garden and house, games and TVs which work well, a brilliant dishwasher, huge amounts of plain crockery and cutlery, comfortable bedding. There were 18 adults sharing a birthday celebration in our party and every person commented on what a wonderful house it was. It seated 20 for the birthday dinner with ease. The walks from the garden up into the woods and beyond were magical. Porlock and the entire coast and area are beautiful - walks varied with coast, moor and woodland to explore. Thank you. It was a really impressive house to rent - we have had many over the years and none have matched it. BW.

* We had a marvellous week at The Cleeve... It is a lovely house in a very convenient setting, and we enjoyed the facilities it offers very much... CC.
2nd April 2010
* The Cleeve lived up to expectations, and was the best place our merry band have stayed in - very comfortable, extremely well equipped, and ideally situated. The deer in the garden were much appreciated! We turned the octagonal sitting room into a music room (we all started learning musical instruments six months ago) and had a concert party to celebrate a birthday. We walked every day, and enjoyed the scenery, and also the many attractions. SB.
