F30 - Porlock Vale House
Cottage | 15 bedrooms | sleeps 30
Take the lane west of Porlock for a mile or so and you find this magnificent house dating from the 19th cent., hugely enlarged by generations of the wealthy as a hunting lodge. It is exquisitely positioned with a superb wooded backdrop looking out over the sea as the coast circles gently round to the small picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir.
Twelve acres of grounds and gardens surround the house, full of mature trees, huge lawns (croquet, play area), small stream and rhododendrons, all managed for maximum wildlife habitat; wisteria cascades from the verandah, with the pebbly beach (excellent surfing for experts) only 250 yards away across two fields (yours to walk).
Inside, a wonderful mixture of comfort, elegance and space. The curving drive brings you to the heavy oak front door with slate-floored porch (for boots/coats); inner hall opening to a heavily beamed living room with comfy leather chairs and handsome original mantelpiece (open fire). Off this room, a wood-panelled bar (glasses provided, but not alcohol!), a rather splendid loo (washbasin), and two more living rooms, one suiting youngsters with TV/DVD, half-sized snooker table, table football, and one elegant with French windows to the terrace, TV/DVD and terrific views - just right for evening drinks. Dining room with big bay window and same brilliant views; the large kitchen is functional with very efficient commercial gas cooker, domestic gas cooker, two dishwashers, microwave, washer-drier, freezer, commercial fridge and access to large terrace.
A lovely curving staircase (stairgate) leads up to the first floor and eight bedrooms – four double (two with 5' beds, one with 6' bed), four twin, all with either en suite shower-room (suite) or bathroom (suite). More stairs (stairgates) to the second floor and seven more bedrooms, all with either en suite bathroom (suite) or shower-room (suite), many with terrific views – five double (four with 5' beds), a single, and a room with three singles.
Professional catering available. Friendly owners live on site and are happy to advise on best walks; pretty pub, 1 mile. Fishing/shooting can be arranged. Damages Deposit £500. Arrival after 4.30pm. Groups with more children than adults not permitted. A superb family house.

The West Country region
Exmoor: exquisite National Park beside the sea: beech trees, sheep, wheeling buzzards and heather hills, from many of which you look over the sea to Wales and its mountains. Below are the most gracefully carved of steep oak-filled valleys where rushing, bouldered little rivers are paddleable and the red deer spend the winters, and perhaps the most dream-like rose-covered cottage villages of them all, where the pace of life is leisurely. At night, marvellously unpolluted skies for stargazing (recently designated an International Dark Sky Reserve).
Porlock Vale is one of the most beautiful farmed bits of England, Dunkery must be ascended, the area of The Chains is wild and wonderful for walking or riding; the Oare valley (Lorna Doone country) is an excellent place to take Granny for a visit to tiny, fascinating Oare church, a cream tea in Malmsmead and a sunset drive afterwards through the Valley of the Rocks to Woody Bay (if you drive well). Minehead, the main town, is good for sandcastles, has a Butlins (and a good golf course and a harbour) and isn't too big. Medieval Dunster is very pretty and has a fine castle (inhabited, National Trust); Dulverton, on the southern edge of the moor and popular with artists, has interesting shops and galleries; Culbone church, one of England's smallest, is worth walking to. Lots of good food pubs in 'hidden' villages, like Luxborough, where the welcome is warm and the atmosphere relaxed.
Porlock Vale: stunningly beautiful, romantic area with some of the best and most varied landscape of the Exmoor National Park, extending from Dunkery Beacon (highest point) to the sea and encompassing many picture-postcard villages, the largest being Porlock at the seaward end. Wonderful walking and pony-trekking.
