The Devon region
The West Country is a beautiful and varied part of England. With the best beaches in the Country, wild cliff top walks and picturesque fishing villages it delights travelers of all ages. It has an abundance of natural beauty, including two National Parks; Dartmoor and Exmoor and boasts the longest walking trail in the UK - the South West Coastal Path at over 600 miles long. The warmth of the Gulf Stream means it has a milder climate than other parts of the UK. The South West is a mecca for outdoor sports enthusiasts offering world class surfing, sailing as well as climbing, canoeing, kite-surfing, hiking, fishing and many more activities.
A Camper Van is the perfect vehicle to tour the West Country by road. Ours is small enough to get through narrow lanes in Devon and Cornwall, low enough to get into beach car parks (many have height restrictions), but large enough to comfortably carry a family of four, and positively roomy for a couple. Whilst a full-blown Motor-home will give you more space a VW van is far more practical - and more economical too.
If you have only experienced traditional tent camping so far you will be amazed by the freedom a campervan gives you - stop anywhere, arrive late, arrive in wet weather (yes we do get some!) - and the campervan is ready for you to sleep in in minutes - no more grappling with tent poles in the dark! You can move much more easily from campsite to campsite, which means you get to see more of this beautiful area.
Devon offers the visitor all the attractions of the West Country packed into one county. Beautiful sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs thatched cottages, quaint cafe's and cosy pubs. With the Cathedral city of Exeter and the maritime history of Plymouth it offers something for city lovers too. Spend a day surfing in North Devon, another cycling the Tarka trail (the area is the inspiration for Henry Williamsons' book Tarka the Otter) and another exploring the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site. When you are fancy a change from the coastline head inland for the wilderness of Dartmoor or Exmoor National Parks or walk the wooded valleys of the South Hams.
Devon is a great family location too. Children will love the beaches, as-well as attractions like Paignton Zoo, Crealy Adventure Park, Woodlands Theme Park, River Dart Country Park and many many more. Take them crabbing at traditional seaside resorts like Teignmouth, Exmouth and Dawlish. The older ones can enjoy cycling or the Go Ape Center at Haldon Forest (near Exeter), Quay West water park at Toquay, or surfing in North Devon and Cornwall.
