About the home

Dream rural retreat in beautiful East Devon countryside. Greengage Cottage is a fine example of a thatched Devon Longhouse. It has medieval origins and is full of character and has been furnished to a very high standard with Laura Ashley fabrics. There are also original tapestries. The property has a safe enclosed garden as well as access to a very large garden and orchard. In all there are 10 acres of grounds to explore.There is also a private heated swimming pool which has exclusive use as well as a tennis court. Other outdoor facilities are badminton and table tennis and a rope swing.

Greengage Cottage has two huge lounges, one upstairs with wonderful views, original beams and trusses. The other is full of character with inglenook fireplace and log burning stove. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is a laundry area with washing machine and clothes dryer. There is broadband access in most of the rooms and TV's with DVD's in both lounges. The cottage is beautifully warm in the winter having the benefit of UFH. There is a large dining table which can sit up to 12 persons. It has been furnished with Laura Ashley fabrics. The original art and textiles are mostly by East Devon artists including Alana the owner.

Extensive outdoor patio with outdoor furniture for 12 persons and BBQ. There is a large enclosed heated swimming pool 33 foot long x 20 foot wide with roman end. Shallow end 3 foot leading to deep end 7 foot. Tennis court as well as outdoor badminton and table tennis. Also outdoor childrens activity area. There is a large garden and orchard for walks and picnics, as well as 10 acres to roam. Wonderful bird life as well as deer and badgers.

Further details

The swimming pool is available from April to September. The normal changeover day is Friday. For short breaks this is Monday. We can accommodate additional persons on request at a small additional charge.

The West Country / Devon region

Beautiful part of Devon. Close to jurassic coast and historic towns of Topsham, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton.
There are several golf courses nearby including Woodbury Park country club (2 miles). Crealy Adventure Park is less than 1 mile away and is ideal for young children. Bicton Park botanical gardens is also close by. Exeter is only 6 miles away and Dartmoor is also closeby.

The Eden project is well worth a visit being only 1 1/2 hours away. There are many spectacular coastal walks as well as hiking on Dartmoor. There are local carp fishing ponds in the village and an indoor go karting centre less than 1 mile away. There are some great character pubs and restaurants nearby.

The Exeter / Topsham area

The Devon County Show is held in May and is only 1 mile away. The Exeter festival is held in July.

Attractions include many national trust properties including Killerton. Also Powderham Castle and Bicton botanical gardens. The Eden project is also not far away.

Visit the historic estuary town of Topsham with its quaint buildings, shops and pubs. Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are beautiful coastal towns.

Other attractions are Crealy adventure park, Greendale go karting, local fishing ponds and our wonderful local farm shop !

“Cosy yet spacious accommodation in a beautiful setting” We were a group of 6 girls and stayed during the wettest April in 100 years. However the wood burning stove and cosy atmosphere of the cottage meant this wasn't an issue. The owner could not have been more accommodating and informative. We spent a lot of time in the hot tub and watched the sun set over the Exe valley. Tony gave us details of places to see and things to do on the wet days and provided taxi numbers etc. The accommodation was spacious and comfortable, clean and well equipped. It is close to Exeter yet feels like the middle of nowhere. Perfect to get away from it all but not feel isolated. We were all well relaxed, including the dog!

“beautiful cottages in an amazing location” We hired both cottages for 2 nights in March for a friends Hen Do. We couldn't have wished to stay anywhere nicer! Both cottages are beautifully decorated with everything you need for a comfortable stay. We enjoyed glorious sunshine and spent our entire weekend at the property making the most of the weather and using the facilities from the tennis court to the hot tub. Tony could not have been more welcoming! We will definitely be back for a second visit!
