The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
We are on the doorstep of the Regional National Park of the Perigord. The area is rich with Renaissance architecture, with the medieval chateaux of Hautefort and Jumilhac-le-Grande within easy reach. The spectacular caves at Lascaux are a little further away, but are well worth a visit. For a day trip, Sarlat and Rocamadour are highly recommended.
The region is renowned for its porcelain, with the world famous Limoges pottery available from many shops in the nearby towns.
The Excideuil / Dussac area
Excideuil is in the northern part of the Dordogne department, about 30 kilometres south of Jumilhac and 15 kilometres from Hautefort.
The town originally developed around a 10th century monastery, in a peaceful setting in the valley of the River Loue. There are a couple of reasons to visit Excideuil, apart from the interesting old-town itself with its gothic church and 16th century houses.
The first is the Thursday market, when the village leaps to life with reputedly the busiest market in the region, the second is the castle. High on a rocky promontory, the castle successfully repelled Richard the Lionheart on three different occasions (note that the main castle is not open to the public).
Set in the rolling green countryside, the Perigord-Limousin Natural Park is nearby. Also try and visit Tourtoirac, a village to the south of Excideuil with the remains of an attractive 11th century abbey.
For the outdoor lovers, the Base de Loisirs, close to Lanouaille a 100 hectare wooded park on the edge of Lac Rouffiac offers many outdoor activities including sailing, water-skiing, canoeing, climbing, archery to name but a few.
If walking or hiking is your passion, we provide maps covering 36 walks in the region ranging from 3 to 17 kilometres.

Everything great. Lily loved the big garden, Mark loved the pool, Janice loved not doing anything. Wish we could have stayed a third week!

Our third year in a row and still a fantastic week! Relaxing as always and great weather. One of this year's highlights was seeing a kingfisher on the lake. Thanks again.

J'adore La Tarrade! Very well equipped place - mixed weather so pool was perfect when sunny. Phil took to the lake for some fishing when overcast - perfect mix. Caught a few small carp, some roach and rudd.

Relaxing or relaxing? Good stuff in every way.

A lovely break with great weather, and accomodation that offered all we needed and more! The fishing was great too. Trips to the Chateaux at Jumilac and Fenelon were great, whilst Les Jardins de l'Imaginaire were well worth a visit. Terrasson was very pretty and we enjoyed our day there. Overall, a really nice holiday made even more special by La Tarrade. Thank you.

A perfect gite for a relaxing getaway! La Tarrade is fantastic, beautifully equipped, quiet and relaxing. The pool is brilliant, but when you can tear yourself away, its well worth doing some exploring - Hautefort and Perigeux are well worth a trip. All in all a wonderful relaxing holiday - just what was needed! Thank you.

This is the best gite we have had in 12 years of coming to France. Comprehensively equipped, very peaceful and ideal for visiting chateaux, villages and churches. We recommend Chez Marie at Sarrazac for excellent cooking. So thanks very much - we would strongly recommend La Tarrade to anyone.
Mr & Mrs Towle - Worksop - July 09
The cottage is just perfect - quiet and relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed trips to Brantome and Sarlat, both quaint towns and lovely stops for lunch and a drink.
