Home description
We are located in a quiet farming community on one of the Coevron hillsides with fantastic views of the valley below where the river Erve meanders through. Being located in Mayenne, places us in the Loire region where the good weather begins.
Le Mans is a short drive away for the racing enthusiasts who want a quiet retreat. There are many other interesting and historic places, such as the Galo Roman town of Jublain, La Fleche Zoo and Saulges Caves, to visit a short drive away.
The nearby quiet village of Saint Georges sur Erve has fishing, hunting and walking activities. You can enjoy quiet walks down local lanes and footpaths directly from our gite. The local Sillé forest has a large lake where you can enjoy fishing, walking, pony riding and boating - ideal for family activities. There are two good restaurants overlooking the lake.

The Loire Valley / Mayenne region
We are situated in the area known as the COEVRONS (hills) encompassing the Mayenne and Sarthe regions. It combines historical heritage and unspoilt countryside with outdoor activities: all-terrain bicycling or hiking in the hills and woods, horse riding along small country lanes, sailing or windsurfing, fishing in the fresh water rivers and ponds.
Generally warmer than UK in the summer. The seasons start about 3 weeks earlier and finish a month later than UK April and May can be pleasant and warm months when our strawberries are ready for picking. June, July and August are usually hot months, ideal for evenings outdoors and BBQs.
Evron / Coevrons area
Explore the amazing geological features of the canyon of Saulges with its two extensive subterranean caves, Rochefort and Margot, discovered in 1967; learn about the ancient world at the Gallo-Roman town of Jublains, Noviodunum, the largest site of Roman ruins in all of the western part of France.
Re-live the middle-ages of William the Conqueror at the thousand-year old fortress of the picturesque village of St Suzanne. The medieval city dominates with its ramparts overlooking the river Erve. Its keep, its castle, its old houses and its museum testify to the richness of its historical past. The site is a paradise for hikers thanks to more than 100 km of paths open to all activities, pedestrian, equestrian and cyclists. St Suzanne and its surroundings, have many festivities and animations both medieval and spectacular, demonstrating knighthood for young and old, to revive the life of the Middle Ages.
Alternatively, you can visit the renaissance chateaux of Bourgon and Roche Pichemer in Saint Ouen des Vallons and the Rocher in Mézangers, and in Evron the remarkable 11th-16th century basilica, Notre Dame de l'Epine, with its Roman and Gothic architecture, and the adjoining 'Our Lady of the Thorn' convent.
Mayenne Region
On both banks of the River Mayenne, reputedly one of France's most picturesque rivers, the département of Mayenne is a rich agricultural area interspersed with lakes and inhabited châteaux and manor houses. The two main towns on the river are Mayenne and Laval.
The main town of Laval is rich in art and history. Set on the banks of the Mayenne River, Laval has a medieval castle which is home to the museum of "naïve art" and a superb collection of marble works from the 17th and 18th century, now perfectly restored and open all year. Guided boat tours can be taken around Laval every day from even in the winter.
The nearby town of Evron is a medieval city where perfect examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture can be seen in its magnificent basilica. It also some good restaurants and supermarkets!
Lassay Les Chateaux is a very attractive old town. The Chateau is open – ask us for details. There are good walks around the town and longer ones taking in all three Chateaux as well as a Matisse Walk. There are often markets with artists and other interesting activities.
Domfront is a very lovely medieval town. Explore the narrow back streets, cafes and restaurants and the church built with concrete. When you get to the top of fortified area, you can enjoy a fantastic view across the surrounding countrysides. Town walk maps are available at the tourist office by the castle entrance. Don't miss the medieval fetes where you can dress up in period costume.
Bagnoles de l’Orne is a Spa town with amazing buildings, a casino, fine shops and restaurants (Hotel de Paris is our favourite with a view of the lake). The lake is a pleasant walk after lunch and has pedalos, tennis and other activities. Events are always happening there, such as antique markets, Tour de France cycle stage, etc.
Jublains is a very large scale Galo-Roman Town, has an excellent museum and fort, theatre, temple and Roman baths (under the church!). A wealth of information.
St. Leonard des Bois is a lovely village with an old church, river walks, canoes – visit St. Ceneri de Gerei which is close by and said to be one of the prettiest villages in France – home to artists - their studios are often open, good restaurants. Walk along the river and enjoy the old church.
Sarthe region
A departement of rich countryside broken up by the rivers Loir and Sarthe. The pretty landscape is best explored on foot or by bike, so that you can take in the unspoilt, charming villages and waterways which are characteristic of Sarthe. The nearby historic town is Sille le Guillaume.
Le Mans, set on the River Sarthe, best known for its 24 hour motor race, is also a beautiful medieval centre with Renaissance buildings, a Gothic cathedral and numerous museums. Other events are shown all year, such as the popular motorcyle weekend race in May.
La Flèche on the River Loir, is home of the La Fleche zoo (open all year) with 30 hectares of river activities. Nearby, Le Lude has a magnificent fortress with guided tours and fabulous "Son et Lumière" shows of fireworks and waterjets by night.
How to get there
Only 2 hours from Caen (Brittany Ferries) or 3 hours from cheaper ferries at Le Havre or Dieppe (LD Lines and Transmanche). Around 4-5 hours from Boulogne/Calais (Seacat, Tunnel, etc). Also cheap flights from Rennes, Angers, Dinan and Tours (Flybe and Ryanair).
