Home description
Ideal for a relaxing holiday for a couple wanting a romantic break, two couples or a family (or 6 people if the option of an extra suite is taken). An open plan living space with glass sliding doors opening onto far-reaching views of the Alentejo oak forest. Open the doors and the inside becomes outside. The private, heated 16 metre swimming pool is shared with the owners and has an area perfect for playing with children or, for adults, another area with in-water table and seat - you will feel that it is your own pool. For the 2010 season the house will have its' own private pool overlooking the countryside.
The private land leads down to a river - walking around you will discover the megalithic anta, the natural spring and the well with its' vegetable garden, fig, apple, nespera and quince trees. Take a picnic and find a favourite spot to spend a long lunch.
Pavia with all amenities, restaurants, bars, mini-markets, chemist, cash machine is within 10 minutes walk or a short drive.

The Southern Plains/Alentejo region
The unspoilt region of Portugal, loved by the Portuguese but, outside the main cities, not discovered by tourists. The largest dam in Europe (Aquelva) is one hour from the property and there are two other large lakes within 20 minutes drive. The Alentejo coast at Comporta with its' long sandy beach and choice of excellent beachfront restaurants is just over one hour's drive. Walk away from the restaurants in either direction and you soon find yourself on your own - even during the height of summer.
Lisbon, with all the facilities of a capital city, is just over an hours' drive. Excellent museums, shopping (Centro Colombo is the largest shopping centre on the Iberian Peninsula), cosmopolitan restaurants and historic areas. Just a little further is the Estoril coast and the dramatic Atlantic waves - famous for surf-boarding Championships.
Lusitano horses in Alter de Chao Visit one of many excellent vineyards in the area for wine tasting
Evora / Vimieiro area
Pavia, the local village is famous for megalitic antas, churches and museum; but it also has bars, 5 restaurants, 3 mini-markets, chemist and a cash-machine.
Evora is a UNESCO World Heritage City, full of restaurants and shops and a great place to spend time. Estremoz is an historic walled city with its' famous Saturday morning market full of antiques (from exceptional to junk), vegetables and even live chickens - full of locals and visitors.
For children there is the history of the river museum at Mora (17km); Monte Selvagem wildlife park near Montemor e Novo; horseriding in Pavia; mountain biking; go-karting near Evora.
For wine lovers, the wines of Alentejo are, we think, the best and it is a booming business. Try them out at one of the local vineyards - for example, Esporao has a guided wine tour which can be followed by lunch in their Michelin rated restaurant.
Arraiolos is famous for hand-made carpets and has festivals dedicated to this - for example, O Tapete na Rua in June.
There are many restaurants around, mostly Alentejo style cooking in the nearby villages and towns - high quality produce, cooked simply - but if your tastes are more cosmopolitan Evora and Estremoz offer different styles.

Guestbook for Monte Alentejo
Paula, Lisbon, Portugal Date of stay : August 2009 It was a pleasure staying with you. The house is fantastic and the view is something we will treasure in our memories. We all had a great time! We can not forget all the small details you have prepared for us - the flowers, the fruit (so good!), the wine (specially the white one - Vinha das Servas - hummmmm!). Thank you! For sure we are going to advertise the house among our friends. Paula, Lisbon, Portugal Date of stay : August 2009
Flora D Hampshire, UK. Date Submitted: August 06, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009 Thank you for a wonderful stay in your new boutique retreat house. After a two hour flight from London Heathrow and approx one hour drive to our destination we were delighted to be staying in the Monte Alentego. The property is immaculate, very well equipped and ideal accommodation for couples/families. The owners were very welcoming and recommended places of interest to visit and restaurants etc. We enjoyed walks in the grounds, meals in the village and relaxing by the pool! Would certainly recommend this property and location and look forward to a return visit very soon!
Wow - what a place for a romantic break. JK, Scotland - July 2009
