Arraiolos is a small town in Alentejo, one of the best kept secrets of Portugal. It is where the real “tapetes de Arraiolos” (Arraiolos rugs) are made. There are plenty of shops to tempt you, as well as to see how they are made.

But actually, all around this area there is plenty to see and do!

From Lisbon to Arraiolos it’s a smooth drive (130kms mostly motorway). From Arraiolos you can easily drive to Évora, one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal (World Heritage site) - the cathedral, the main square and the churches should not be missed! Lovely Estremoz is well worth a visit and for a different type of program, the Alqueva dam will be a lot of fun: water sports, boat trips, swimming….

In the village there are some local stores and a small restaurant serving simple meals.

For more important shopping there is Arraiolos, 10kms away.

In Monte do Cortiço (“monte” means farm) you will find all the peace and quiet that you long for and it is great for children as there is all the space they can hope for!

The lovely house, in the old Alentejo style, was totally recovered by its owners, yet keeping all the beautiful old charm.

The whole property is set in a square patio: straight ahead there is the old fountain, to the right some unused barns and to the left, the house itself.

Inside, there is a lovely, cosy sitting/dining-room, with a huge fireplace (typical of the area), very pleasant in the chilly winter months. It opens onto a lovely patio, fabulous for al-fresco meals, and the swimming-pool (parents with small children should be aware that the pool is not fenced-in). The kitchen, fully equipped with all the modern commodities, yet it has kept the old, charming aspect.

Then, there are three bedrooms: one double with en-suite bathroom and two twins, sharing a bathroom. And another 3 beds bedroom in the atick.
