The Alentejo region

The Alentejo covers a huge area, almost a third of the country, stretching south from the Rio Tejo to the northern mountain ranges of the Algarve. This is Portugal's garden - pastureland and wheat fields alternate with vineyards, olive groves and sparse forests of cork oak. It is a region well worth exploring and offers unexpected surprises, from superbly sited castles to Roman ruins and sweeping Atlantic beaches. It is a wildlife lovers paradise with hundreds of species of bird, from black stork to great bustard, as well as wild boar.

Evora

For most visitors, the region's major draws are its towns, two of which have UNESCO World Heritage status: the spectacular fortified town of Elvas, (70kms) and Évora, (20kms) (whose Roman temple, medieval walls and cathedral have put it firmly on the tourist circuit. In under an hour, you can call also find the dazzling hilltop villages of Monsaraz and the marble towns of Estremoz and Vila Viçosa, where the local marble quarries have given an opulent look to many of the buildings. Visit the Alqueve Dam which constitutes one of the largest dams and man made lakes in Western Europe, or tour a local vineyard and taste the superb wines this area has to offer. Quinta de Cartuxa e na Herdade de Esporão is one of the finest of the region and also boasts one of the best restaurants in the whole of Portugal.
