This old stable is beautifully refurbished and has a cool patio under the vines. The area around is mainly farmed and perfect if you would like to stay close to the beach.
The house consist of 2 bedrooms upstairs (both with double beds).
Downstairs you have the sitting room with a sofa that can be used as a sofa bed for 2 people. There is a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and a laundry area. We also have a baby cot available if needed.
We encourage all our guests to taste the local produce from our lands when in season. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs and of course grapes!
If you are visiting us in the time of picking the grapes, you are welcome to take part in picking or stamping!
You will need a car when staying in the Stable. There is no real buss connection and even though it is 3 minutes drive to Calheta beach, it is not possible to walk because the road goes through a tunnel and there is no real sidewalks. We advice you to hire a car at Funchal Airport. Then you can pick up and drop off the car at the airport. There is also a car-hire company in Calheta, but their prices tends to be the same as those at the airport.
Every day there is a bread-van that drives past the house, selling fresh bread and cakes. Make sure you try the portuguese custard tarts called Pasteis de Nata. (they are jummy!)
The Stable has free wi-fi.

The Madeira Islands region
The island of Madeira is famous for its lush nature, good climate and world known Madeira wine.
The island is very green all year round with endless opportunities for walking in the mountains and along the levadas (water canals).
The climate is very mild and stable throughout the year, averaging 23-26 in the summer and 18-20 in the winter.
Estreito da Calheta
Our house is located in Calheta on the south side of the island. The only sandy beach in Madeira is located 3 minutes drive away and is perfect for swimming and ideal for families with children. There are shops and restaurants along the waterfront.
The charming village of Jardin do Mar is only 5 minutes drive away. This village is very picturesque and lies beautifully along the cost. Park your car at the parking and walk to the village square. Walk down the pedestrian road to the left past a local shop and follow the road down to the promenade. At the end follow the signs to Joe's bar for a refreshing drink or lunch (At the top when the road forks keep right to the bar and parking).

"Lovely country setting and very friendly owners next door"
We,ve been here three times and always had a great time. A beautiful island, and the stable has e very thing you need for self catering. All the locals are very friendly, and you are away from the hustle and bustle of towns. Would strongly recommend this house. John and daisy Hemings.

"Beautiful little house with stunning views of the Atlantic"
We have just come back from a 10 day stay at The Stables and what a joy it was. The accommodation was far superior than we were expecting and is fantastic value for money. Just a 10 minute drive from Calheta beach the property is up a very steep hill. It is situated on Joseph and Maria’s lovely small holding with stunning views from the terrace of the Atlantic and their vineyard. The accommodation would easily suit two couples during the summer, although in the winter you may be a little cosy in the lounge area. We only really used one of the bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom, the rest of the time was spent on the terrace enjoying the peaceful scenery with a bottle of good Portuguese wine, which you must take advantage of! Joseph and Maria were lovely hosts and as the other views state, they willingly supplied us with fresh vegetables and we would have come home with some of the bananas from their plantation if we could have sneaked through customs with them! The kitchen would do with a few more pans and utensils but what was there was sufficient, however Maria and Joseph did kindly fetch us a barbeque when we asked for one. So although we had good intentions to go out and eat on an evening we actually spent most nights with the BBQ out cooking up lots of fresh fish and meat which can be purchased from the supermarket by Calheta beach, a cheap and delicious meal which would have cost you a whole more in a restaurant. Overall Madeira is a lovely place to visit and we would definitely recommend staying at The Stables.

An old stable building, beautifully restored, very neat and tidy. Lovely balcony from the main bedroom, with extensive views across the bay out to sea. We visited in April when it was still rather cold in the mornings. This meant we could not open the doors to look at the view, as strangely enough, all the glass in the doors was frosted, so the only way to look outside on the ground floor was to open the doors! Similarly, the door leading out to the balcony also had frosted glass, so the only way to see the view from your bed was to open the door - not possible in the cold weather. The kitchen was very nice and spacious, but lacking in basic equipment like a tin opener and scissors for opening packaging. The bathroom was really lovely. The owners were very nice to talk to and very helpful, but we would have liked a welcome pack with basic info about shops, amenities, the bread van, maybe a map of the local area etc. The beds were very hard and uncomfortable; we put one mattress on top of another and that helped a bit. We never got used to all the dogs that seem to bark continuously at night. A DVD player would have been nice: the remote for the satellite box didn't work, even when we had requested new batteries. The price for this property is very reasonable, so in that sense the Stable exceeded our expectations. All in all, we had a lovely stay on this beautiful island and were blessed with much warmer weather the last 5 days of our stay. We would like to return to Madeira, but not to the Stable.

"perfect, romantic, off-the-beaten-track holiday home"
We are a couple in their 50's who like walking and being in a more rural area. When we arrived at 'The Stables' we were amazed at how big it was - the pictures don't do it justice. It was all very high spec inside with solid wooden floors upstairs and high wooden pitched roof to the two huge bedrooms. The lovely part was the master bedroom had a door leading out to the terrace and I could sit in bed and see the sea! The downstairs was all tiled, with a four piece bathroom (clever Norwegian shower), a utility room with washing machine, a full equipped kitchen with microwave, large fridge/freezer, gas hob and electric oven etc. The lounge had TV and Zon (the equivalent of Freeview) - many channels in english. We were surrounded by little irrigation channels and beautifully cultivated areas of potatoes, cabbages, broccoli, vines etc. The owners lived next door but behind and it wasn't at all intrusive. They were so kind and gave us vegetables from their smallholding. Their english is very good having lived in S Africa for years. The weather was amazing t-shirt during the day temperatures - we stayed for 2 weeks until New Year's Eve. There are now new tunnels from the airport and the journey took approx 50 minutes. Hiring a car would be a good idea. A van selling fresh bread and cakes passes the end of the cottage every morning! We don't very often return to a place, but the island, the people and the holiday cottage won us over and we will return.
Thank you for the kind words. It is written that you can sit in bed and watch the nice view. It is not so easy to see the nice view from the bed, really :) But from the terrace/balcony or even the bedroom window it is possible!
