The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region

The beach of São Pedro do Estoril boasts a very particular beauty, because it is surrounded by ravines and it has a float bridge to the east and the Ponta do Sal to the west. In the walking area one can find restaurants, bars and outdoor cafés and its waters stage many national and international surfing and bodyboard competitions.

Accesses are easy as it has a large parking area for those coming from the Estrada Marginal (coastline road) and an underground tunnel for those who arrive by train. The visitors get off at the station which is in the heart of the São Pedro do Estoril, with lots of trees and commerce, services and restaurants - all this in small houses of noble contours.

It is said that Nunes dos Santos, owner of the Armazéns do Chiado, bought land here in the 1920s (at the time São Pedro was still called Cai-Água), and was responsible for the existence of the railroad stop because he gave the necessary money and land for its construction.

ESTORIL

A worldly renowned, cosmopolitan resort, Costa do Estoril borders with the sea in the south, extending from Carcavelos up to the northern border of the county of Cascais.

A summer centre and with a animated night life, iodine-rich beaches bathed by the serene Atlantic Ocean and boasting excellent hotels, golf courses, a casino and a motor racing course.

Tourism was explored specially since the 30s, when it was home to exiled European monarchies (amongst whom the Juan Carlos ? the King of Spain), writers, politicians, artists, businessmen and Jews pursued by the Third Reich. The centre of this luxurious resort was at the time the Casino, the true ex-libris of Estoril.

Today, in addition to the fine sandy beaches there is a vast number of attractions, amongst which the proximity to Lisbon, to Serra de Sintra, and to the beautiful town of Cascais. On the other hand, it offers golf lovers nine 18-hole fields, amongst other smaller ones, most of which designed by famous architects and with attractive choice of courses. In April and May it hosts the Estoril Open, one of the rare tennis events that joins tournaments that count for the official classifications of the ATP and the WTA Tour.

One must also highlight its excellent Casino that in addition to offering various games, it houses daily cabaret shows or music-hall, concerts and temporary exhibitions. The Feira de Artesanato do Estoril (FIARTIL) (Handicraft Fair) held nearby in July and August is the oldest in Portugal, where works in ceramics, azulejo, linen, wool, and other materials are made and sold. At this event you can also delight yourself with the folklore and the delicious Portuguese traditional gastronomy.
