Dar Zerwala is a stylish, recently renovated riad in the ancient Medina in Essaouira. It is built on three floors with two roof terraces at the top and sleeps 10 persons in four bedrooms.

On the ground floor, there is a well-equipped kitchen/dining room and a large salon with full length windows which open on to a sheltered patio ideal for leisurely breakfasts. Here there is also a small pool heated by solar energy suitable for a relaxing dip. The salon is also equipped with a large, flat screen television and DVD player.

The bedrooms consist of two double-bedded rooms, one with two single beds and a large family room which has a double bed in the main area and two singles on the mezzanine floor. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom.
The top floor roof terraces are sunny and sheltered and each is furnished with sunbeds, table and chairs.

Dar Zerwala is situated on the west side of the Medina which is generally agreed to be the part which gets most sunshine.

The Marrakech / Essaouira / Essaouira Region

The climate along the Atlantic Coastal Plain is semi-tropical, remaining warm and balmy during the winter. The high temperatures in the summer months are relieved by a good Atlantic breeze.

While the summer sun is reliable you will need a sweater for the evenings.

Essaouira / Ancient Medina area

Essaouira is a picturesque Moroccan fishing village which offers something for everyone. It is steeped in history and culture. Situated as it is on a stunning 7km long beach it is a destination for surfers and watersports enthusiasts. It offers excellent shopping, restaurants and opportunities for just soaking up the atmosphere.

The Medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city and has a relaxed laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy the bustle of the souk or the hubbub of the busy port or simply relax by walking along the ramparts to enjoy the spectacle of the waves below or the beauty of the sunsets.

There are facilities for horse riding, camel safaris and quad biking as well as surfing, windsurfing and kite-surfing. There is also tennis in the town.

How to get there

Fly to Marrakesh or Agadir and then either bus or taxi to Essaouira. Airlines to Marrakesh include Atlas-Blue, Easy Jet, Ryanair and Thomson Fly.

There is an excellent bus service to Essaouira called 'Supratours' which costs around 65Dh (about £5) and takes 3 hours.

A taxi can be arranged to meet you at the airport and cost about 800Dh (about £65) and takes about 2.5 hours.

We had a great time at the riad. Very impressed with the location and décor. Essaouira is a brilliant choice especially for first visits to Morocco as it’s traditional and prides itself on being relaxed and hassle free.
The riad offers plenty of space, even for big groups and has all mod cons.

I would highly recommend Dar Zerwala as an amazing place to stay...for
families it is ideal as there is enough space for privacy, for groups of
friends it offers a really sociable space. It's a totally unique living
experience..traditional, yet exquisitely decorated, the roaring log fire
makes for a cosy and romantic feel. While there the housekeeper looked after
us and cooked us delicious meals. A short walk to the beach and endless
opportunities to meander through the beautiful market stall laden streets.
The local restaurants are good value, offering excellent food and the people
were friendly - we loved it and are hoping to visit again!'.
