The Marrakech/Essaouira region

The climate along the Atlantic Coastal Plain is semi-tropical, remaining warm and balmy during the winter. The high temperatures in the summer months are relieved by a good Atlantic breeze.

While the summer sun is reliable you will need a sweater for the evenings.

Essaouira is a picturesque Moroccan fishing village which offers something for everyone. It is steeped in history and culture. Situated as it is on a stunning 7km long beach it is a destination for surfers and watersports enthusiasts. It offers excellent shopping, restaurants and opportunities for just soaking up the atmosphere.

The Medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage listed city and has a relaxed laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy the bustle of the souk or the hubbub of the busy port or simply relax by walking along the ramparts to enjoy the spectacle of the waves below or the beauty of the sunsets.

There are facilities for horse riding, camel safaris and quad biking as well as surfing, windsurfing and kite-surfing. There is also tennis in the town.

"An amazing experience, not for the faint hearted!"

The property is very much as advertised, the service from the lady who made breakfast was really good, she was extremely helpful and informative. Our group consisted of 3 couples but the property could easily sleep the 10 as advertised. As a group we really enjoyed our stay and found it extremely good value for money. Ruth the owner was very helpful organising transfers from airport to resort.

The resort seems to vary very much from bar to bar, our suggestion would be always ask for a menu and check prices, if you don't they seem to charge what they like! The sea and beach were lovely, the sea felt very safe to swim in.

If it is your first time in Morocco be aware that there are some beggars to deal with. Some of the locals also take offence if you take photographs without asking permission.

As a group we had a wonderful time and hopefully will return once again soon.

"Beautiful Riad but needs a good clean"

This Riad was very reasonably priced, well placed with the Medina, all the rooms were lovely and the whole place was very stylishly decorated with glamorous lights, and fittings. It has a real wow fac… More

Thank you for your review which, in the light of your reported experiences, seems a fair one as you highlight the many positive aspects of your stay in the house as well as the negative ones. The most important criticism for me is the fault with the electrics which I have taken very seriously. I hasten to add that nothing like this has happened before and, since your stay, investigations and repairs have been made and subsequently inspected to ensure that the electrics are once again safe. As for the fact that the house was dirty, I am at a loss to explain what went wrong here and I have questioned the staff in Essaouira who are responsible for the cleaning and upkeep. I offer my apologies and the only explanation I can suggest – which is not an excuse – is that the changeover from the previous clients and your arrival took place on the same day. As you know, the house is large and it may be that Fatiha found it difficult to maintain standards in the time available. I have given instructions that when such a situation occurs again she can call upon extra help to ensure that the house is prepared to a satisfactory standard. She already sends sheets and other linen to the laundry if she is pressed for time and you commented on the spotless bedlinen so this may be a solution. I also take your point about the crockery and glasses and intend to attend to this in the next few weeks. Again, I thank you for your comments and have used them to improve standards in the future. I am glad that, on balance, you enjoyed your holiday at Dar Zerwala and would recommend the house to others as being good value for money.

"A beautiful house in a quiet part of the Medina"

We stayed for a week at the beginning of April and would have stayed longer if the house had been available. From the beginning of the booking process the owner responded promptly to all our emails and offered useful advice and local recommendations. We received a warm welcome from the house manager who even met us outside the Medina when we arrived. The house is very spacious and all the bedrooms rooms are beautifully proportioned with private bathrooms. Although the house has been renovated in a traditional style (and to a very high standard) it has all modern conveniences including a big kitchen, comfortable living area and WiFi. The house was cleaned daily and cooking services were available although we did not use these on this occasion. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this house to others. It would be a great place to come as a large family group or with friends as there is plenty of space inside and outside on the sun terraces. The quiet and safe situation near to Bab Marrakech is perfect for a stroll around the median or a trip to the beach.

"Lovely riad in the medina. Worked very well for us with a young family."

Great place to stay while holidaying in Essaouria. Lots of space with everything we needed. The lady who worked at the riad was really helpful & able to arrange massages. Beds were lovely & comfy!

"A beautiful quiet riad in the Medina near the beach, in 1 word perfect!"

We (2 parents and 3 children, aged 14, 12 and 11) stayed for 6 days in Dar Zerwala. It is a beautifully decorated riad, with all equipment you need.
The livingroom has enough place for 8 people. Through a door one enters a corridor with a spiral staircase (with access to upper floors) and the kitchen.
There are 4 bedrooms, which are all decorated differently. Every room has it's own bathroom, all comfortable. There is a small plungepool in the yard, which is nice if temperature rises. And on the rooftop there is a terrace. Wifi internet is available and working well (on the first floor)
The riad was larger than we expected based on the photo's, with more than enough space for us. The femme de ménage is a very nice lady, who speaks English reasonably well. On request she can make breakfast (with nice pastries and fresh fruits and so) and cook dinner as well (also nice), both after local payments.
The riad is located in the southeast part of the medina. It takes a short walk to the beach (or to the shopping areas) In the riad it is very quiet and one can not hear the liveliness of the medina.
During the booking the owner pleasantly answered all our questions and gave us all kind of information on Essaouira also.
We recommend this riad for its equipment, size and location. We also recommend Essaouira for the pleasant, relaxed atmosphere and friendly people.
