The Marrakech / Essaouira / Essaouira Region region

Essaouira is a historic, walled town and an Atlantic coast UNESCO World Heritage Site and this bohemian town is where Jimi Hendrix liked to hang out. The Portuguese ramparts and a small working fishing port provide plenty of sites to explore.
All year around family / adventure possibilities include camel riding, dune buggies, trekking, surfing, swimming, tennis, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, wind-surfing, mountain biking.
The Essaouira area
The town of Essaouira, with its Portuguese ramparts, busy fishing port, and cresent shaped 15km beach is a holiday destination with adventures to offer all ages of visitor.
For the activity led traveller this includes dune buggies, horse safaris and camel riding, hiking, kite-surfing, wave surfing, local vineyard visits and tasting, a local farmers market in Haa Draa, safe swimming both in the sea and hotel pools, golf at Diabat, sailing, bird spotting, fishing, windsurfing, and mountain biking.
In the lively Medina (walled city and UNESCO World Heritage Site) visitors can find hidden gems crafted from Thuya wood, leather, silver, and ceramics. For those visitors who enjoy food and cooking there are many fruits, vegetables, meat, spices and fresh fish to buy in the souks. The internationally acclaimed restaurants and cafes in and outside of the Medina offer Moroccan, French and Italian cuisine. The is also a popular french cafe culture amongst the visitors and locals.
You can take short day trips to; Moulay Bouzerktoune a stretch of beach with a stronger side shore wind than Essaouira, and offers one of the best wave spots just outside Europe. In the winter with 2 - 5 meters waves this is a spot for confident wave sailors.
Sidi Kaouki to the south of Essaouira this is a 5 km long beach again with a cross shore wind and good waves in the winter. Conditions here can vary and with different entry points you will find the right waves for beginner and more advanced wave sailors.
Festivals - there are many world-famous festivals throughout the year in Essaouira, notably The Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival (annually in June) - a celebration of the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, the product of a mystic tradition with branches as widespread as Haitian voodoo and Brazilian Candomblé.

Guestbook for Dar Doughri, Essaouira
We really enjoyed our stay in Morocco and especially Essaouira. The house was very comfortable, Fouad was very helpful and Karima made us some memorable meals. As we had been to Essaouira before, we took it very easy and just enjoyed the atmosphere of the Medina, the fishing port and the skalas. The silversmith in the Centre Artisanale just inside Bab Marrakech made us a beautiful filigree pendant to order. On other days, we relaxed on the roof terrace while the children enjoyed horse riding and dune buggy outings. The recently opened branch of the Moroccan supermarket chain 'Essawak Essalam' is a few minutes from the Dar by 'petit taxi' and we found it to be very well stocked, albeit without alcohol. Best regards,Mairead and Hans (August 2010)
I just wanted to say that we thought the accommodation was fantastic. We all had a lovely relaxing time. It was quite windy the first couple of days but the last full day we had in Essaouira was gorgeous and the waves were perfect for surfing. My six year old foster daughter loved the DVDs and she almost left with the Mr Men one!. Foaud and Karima were very welcoming and helpful. Thanks again.Enjoy your trip.Kind regardsJules, Kelly and Paige (April 2010)
"A fantastic family home, just perfect for us, everything just fell into place immediately. Fiona is so helpful, she arranged a straightforward pick up from Marrakech. So many touches in the dar were appreciated - books, dvds, games.....Karima's cooking was fantastic, we stayed for 4 nights and ate in 3 times - we tried fish, chicken and lamb, all superb and beautifully served. We went camel trekking, swimming and ate lots of seafood and ice cream! Dar is in a fantastic location and exceptional value. If you're looking for a different side to Morocco and Marrakech, it's here. We will be returning!" Saadia, Kamran, Imaan & Zahra (April 2010)
"Cannot recommend restaurants for evening dining since as soon as we realised how good Karima's home cooking was, we monopolised her for the whole week! At lunchtimes we tried a variety of cafes, though felt the fish stalls overpriced. The italian icecream parlour place was well patronised. We all enjoyed the Hammam baths and various treatments, and riding in the horse carriages delighted Jacob. There was a cultural festival on during our stay involving groups of rather ancient soldiers and drum-banging, dancing and crowd participation - but had been warned by Nour to beware of possibility of thieves coming into town with the festival, so only observed the fringes of it. We loved the photography opportunities, especially at the harbour. Anna busy making a photo book this week...
The wind was very strong for windsurfing or kitesurfing the week we were in Essourira, but at a different time of year these would have been great activities for the lads. Most days the beach was not too windy, though, for sandcastles and paddling.
In terms of house safety for children, we were very happy with all the arrangements.Yes, the car seat was produced, clearly not a frequently used feature and took a little time at the airport to get it installed into the vehicle effectively, but fine otherwise and both taxi drivers very pleasant and drove well, and the organiser of the taxis also came to the house the day before our return to check all well, and on the day we left too. At the airport no difficulty at all finding our taxis." Jane Cunningham and family (April 2010)
"Thank you so much for the use of your beautiful, comfortable and spacious house. We were a bit unlucky with the weather as we did have a lot of rain but it was December after all and we found that even though the wind blew also the temperature was lovely and warm.
Fouad was very helpful when we needed him to arrange things for us and Karima prepared wonderful breakfast’s everyday for us and cooked some meals in the evening" (Frances and family December 2009)
