The Marrakech / Essaouira / Essaouira Region
Essaouira is a historic, walled town and an Atlantic coast UNESCO World Heritage Site, just a few hours west of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains. The bohemian town where Jimi Hendrix liked to hang out is a perfect spot to unwind, eat great seafood and absorb the laidback and atmospheric scene.
To the west of the Medina the rampart walls and fortifications drop directly into the Atlantic with a picturesque fishing port filled with bright blue boats, while a few minutes walk from the main square, the wide beach curves around the bay.
One of the few places in Morocco to be popular in the summer months as the Atlantic breeze ensures that the temperatures rarely stray past 35 degrees, almost year round blue sky's ensure a wonderful trip whatever the season. However, low season is commonly thought of as November to February when the nights can be cold and the weather more unpredictable.
Essaouira / Ancient Medina area
THE MEDINA - Designed in the mid 1700’s by a French architect, the medina is an intriguing fusion of French-style piazzas with traditional subterranean passages, vaulted alleys and traditional courtyard houses. Its whitewashed buildings, with ornate doorways and windows painted blue to match the sky, are enclosed by intact pink fortifications. Packed with shops and stalls selling handicrafts, jewellery, spices, leathergoods and the famous local argon oil it is the ideal place to while away the hours, before relaxing at one of the numerous cafe's or enjoying a massage at a local hammam.
THE PORT & THE RAMPARTS - Skala de la ville is the impressive sea bastion built along the cliffs. Its is home to a collection of European brass cannons from the 18th and 19 th centuries and has great views out to sea. Locals and tourist alike gather here to watch the sun disappear over the horizon. The port, bustling with ship-builders and fishing boats is a great place to eat freshly caught seafood and the snug, fortified harbour, immediately southwest of the media, is a hive of activity with nets laid out on the quayside, fishing boats unloading their catch, traditional wooden boats being built and seafood sizzling on outdoor grills.
THE BEACH - Essaouira not only has a beautiful, long white sandy beach that stretches for miles (listed as one of the worlds best beaches!) but is also world-renowned for its surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, with the powerful trade wind blowing onto the protected, bay. Aside from watersports and sunbathing, the beach is used for horseriding or camel riding and the dunes are ideal for a spot of quad biking. A short walk down the beach is the romantic fort of Borj El Barod which is slowly crumbling into the sea and nearby you can watch birds at the Ksob estuary or else take a short boat trip to the Iles de Mogador, breeding ground for the rare Eleanora’s falcon which can sometimes be seen circling over the town.
FESTIVALS - there are many world-famous festivals throughout the year in Essaouira, notably The Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival (annually in June) - a celebration of the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, the product of a mystic tradition with branches as widespread as Haitian voodoo and Brazilian Candomblé.
