About the home

Essaouira is Morocco's most captivating coastal resort, with year-round blue skies and a relaxed, welcoming air - a perfect spot in which to recharge your batteries and soak up a different culture.

Dar 91 (established 2005) is a beautifully restored house with two separate entrances and containing 3 separate apartments. The two bigger properties, Wahed (2 bedrooms) and Zhuzh (1 bedroom), have private roof terraces with sweeping views across Essaouira's ancient medina. There is also a separate studio apartment, Tlata (1 bed). In each property there are also sofas where additional people can sleep.

The Dar 91 apartments are situated in Chbanat district, near Bab Doukala (the northern gate) - a part of town famous for its textile workshops, where weavers spin their yarn and produce beautiful cloth on hand looms, set back from the street in tiny workshops. Bakeries, grocery shops and barrows laden with seasonal fruit are on your doorstep. Essaouira's main souks are less than five minutes away; cafes, restaurants, the beach and harbour are within an easy stroll.

Set over three floors, Dar 91 Wahed has French windows overlooking characterful Rue Chbanat. On the first floor you'll find a twin/double bedroom (with an extra child bed) and a bathroom. The living room (with fireplace), kitchen and dining area occupy the second floor, and a double bedroom and bathroom make up the third floor – leading onto a small terrace. From here, wooden stairs lead up to a large terrace with uninterrupted views across the medina and to the sea.

Zhuzh, accessed via a separate front door, is a spacious and groovy duplex apartment on the second to fourth floors. It features a stylish open plan living room/kitchen; an elegant double bedroom (with fireplace) and ensuite shower room; a chillout zone/extra bed on a mezzanine floor; and a stunning two-level roof terrace which towers over Essaouira's ramparts, with panoramic views across the medina and to the sea. Under Zhuzh on the first floor is Tlata - a charming studio apartment sleeping 2 in a double mezzanine bed.

Booked in its entirety, Dar 91 can accommodate large families, although generally we let the apartments separately - Wahed to families or friends travelling in a small group, Zhuzh to couples and Tlata to couples or friends (Zhuzh and Tlata let together also work well for families). Within reason we are flexible about numbers and are happy to help you think about the best combination to suit your party.

All three properties feature reclaimed, fixed-up furniture, and combine traditional, vintage and modern objects within a clean, contemporary aesthetic. We have focused particularly on interesting lighting combinations. Unlike many Moroccan properties let out to tourists, the house doesn't feature a central courtyard - a big advantage if you value your privacy, as you won't be sharing the house or roof terraces with other guests. Our aim is simple – to provide you with the comfort and space to recharge your batteries and draw inspiration from the rhythms of Essaouira.

Conditions

We let each property as a whole rather than 'by the room', and breakfast and daily maid service is included in the price. Prices quoted are for adults; discounts apply for children. We require a 50% deposit to confirm booking, with the balance payable 30 days before stay.

The Marrakech / Essaouira / Essaouira Region region

According to Unesco, Essaouira is an "exceptional" example of a late-18th-century fortified town, built according to the principles of contemporary European military architecture in a North African context.

It's also a really cool place to hang around in, strolling through the souks, sipping mint tea in the many pavement cafes, and watching the world go by. There's a hugely long, sandy beach, ideal if you're into windsurfing or other watersports activities...or just like long walks. There's a fantastic working harbour and a host of great restaurants and street food outlets. The whole of the old medina is pedestrianised, so it's great for kids.

And then of course there's the weather - an almost permanently blue sky, beautiful sunshine for most of the year, and sunsets to die for.

Essaouira is popular with painters, photographers, writers, poets and musicians. The fusion of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian traditions make it a tolerant and welcoming place.

The town is famous for the Gnaoua Festival, which takes place in the last week of June each year. Other festivals include the Festival des Alizes, Festival des Jeunes Talents and the Festival des Andalousies.
