BookThe Marrakech / Essaouira / Essaouira Region region
Essaouira is a former Portuguese settlement in the 18th century, Essaouira overlooks an emerald sea where windsurfers frolic near the fringe of silvery beach and camels ferry passengers across fine sand. Dine at the fish market where you can select your fish to be grilled before your eyes.
Explore the old fortress ramparts, browse artisan shops, or dream on the beach. Soak in the atmosphere that has been an inspiration since the 1960s for music legends from the Rolling Stones to Cat Stevens to Jimmy Hendrix, who composed Castles in the Sand on Essaouira’s beaches.
Today the town continues to lure musicians and artists alike to the sparkling whitewashed fishing village trimmed with the brilliant azure of its skies.
The laid-back attitude, plum accommodation, artsy atmosphere, bracing sea breezes and picture-postcard ramparts make Essaouira a firm favourite on the traveller’s trail. It’s the kind of place where you’ll sigh deeply and relax enough to shrug off your guarded attitude and just soak up the atmosphere.
See the below very useful website which covers extensive information, advice and pictures etc on Essaouira and Morocco generally.

The Essaouira / El Ghazoua area
The villa is located on the outskirts of the coastal town of Essaouira and is located in a quiet and peaceful Berber village, which is only six miles from the centre of town. Within a two minutes walk from the villa is a small Moroccan Riad style hotel and here there is a restaurant and bar for local entertainment.
A pleasant 10 minute walk from the villa are a number of local Moroccan style grocery shops and within another 10 minutes of walking are a number of shops, an internet cafe and restaurants where Moroccan and western style food is served. From here is the main coast road into Essaouira, which is just 5 miles to the centre of town.
Essaouira Golf Club:
Golf De Mogador is the local Golf Club and is set within beautilful grounds located on the outskirts of Essaouira and is approximently 3KMs or 2 Miles along the main road from the Villa towards Essaouira - see their website http://www.golfdemogador.com
Essaouira Gnaoua Festival (7 Days – once a Year, usually in June):
Come to Morocco and witness the rich culture by participating in Essaouira Gnaoua festival. The Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival celebrate the mysterious music of the Gnaouas and other worldwide rhythms. Originating through a cross-pollination of African magic and Islamic rituals, mesmerizing Gnaoua rhythms of drums and other instruments lead performers into a trance-like state. The Essaouira Gnaoua festival is held in Essaouira, a picturesque port painted in blue and white that is the ideal resort of which most travellers dream: laid-back and yet vibrant, atmospheric yet relaxing. In this extraordinary melting pot of music, jazz, rock, and world musicians create original fusions on stage and share their musical cultures. Essaouira Gnaoua festival performances are in afternoons and evenings, giving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the idyllic charm of Essaouira by day. It is one of the major festivals in Morocco. Essaouira Gnaoua festival performances are known to be one of the best out of the many festivals in Morocco.
Spend the afternoon at the Essaouira Gnaoua festival as you explore fascinating local souks (markets), ancient palaces, and lush gardens. Be sure to visit the Djemaa el-Fna at the Essaouira Gnaoua festival, a carnivalesque public square where water sellers, snake charmers, magicians, and storytellers compete for an audience. A former Portuguese settlement in the 18th century, Essaouira overlooks an emerald sea where windsurfers frolic near the fringe of silvery beach and camels ferry passengers across fine sand. | Airport: | Essaouira: 8 km |
Essaouira Airport is currently being substantially developed and is in the process of being turned into an International Airport.
Currently flights into Essaouira only originate from either Paris or Casablanca in Morocco. However once the transformation of Essaouira's Airport into a International Airport, then flights into Essaouira will begin on an International basis.
Currently the best journey into Essaouira is from Marrakech and this is around 105 miles, or around two hours by car.
We have a regular and very reliable Taxi driver which we use ourselves. The cost for his services are as follows:
Marrakech Airport to the Villa in Essaouira is 600 Dirhams or around £45 to £50 each way and is the same price for day or night journeys to and from the airport.
If a larger 9 seater Air-Conditioned People Carrier is required then this cost will be 1,000 Dirhams or around £80 each way.
Taxis from the Villa to central Essaouira are 100 Dirhams or around £8.

The villa was amazing! Large enough so that we all had our own space, and great for family fun! There were 8 in our group (including 2 small children) so the pool was perfect. Many afternoons spent... more |

We very much enjoyed a relaxing ten days at this charming villa in February. Being our first family holiday away with our 6 month old baby we were slightly anxious as to what to expect but the villa and area far outweighed our expectations. The villa is very spacious with plenty of room for a large family to stay comfortably. Both the pool and garden area are completely secluded and secure offering a perfect setting to relax. We absolutely agree with the previous reviews that the caretaker Hassan, is utterly charming and very helpful with any questions you may have on the area or the villa itself. Car hire is essential as the villa is set down a long bumpy track off the main road so in the heat, could be quite a challenging walk. Essaouria itself is a wonderful place to explore. With a bohemian magnetism, offering colourful back streets and vibrant markets with fresh fruit, meat and vegetables, a perfect place to stock up on supplies for the barbeque! We would highly recommend this villa if you are looking for a peaceful holiday setting. |

The villa is lovely and spacious, although when we went it was in need of some repair . It is totally out of the way and a car is essential . The house manager is friendly and comes to clean the pool . When we stayed the solar heaters did not work . The rent is reasonable as there are four good sized bedrooms and the bath was wonderful. We had problems with the tv when we stayed and also cockroaches , The kitchen was very basic , especially the cooker . Essauira is an interesting town and the whole Moroccan experience was wonderful , the people are very friendly and it was an enjoyable , relaxing holiday . Response: These guests of mine stayed during Easter 2012 and so some time ago. The Satellite System at the time had some problems with the Satellite Dish itself, which was fixed last May by the original installer of my satellite system. My Cooker is some 5 years old now and this will be replaced by a brand new Gas / Electric Cooker when I visit the Villa in February and March 2013. The kitchen is now fully equipped with everything that you will need for a self catering holiday, whether indoors or outdoors. My Villa is located in a tropical country and in a village and so sometimes insects decide to roam into the Villa complex. Saying that I have checked this out and since then I have had no recurrences. The Solar Panels are only used in Winter, early Spring or late Autumn, as for the rest of the time the air temperature is lovely and hence the water temperature is lovely and warm. The solar panels are being assessed by me in my next trip to the Villa in February 2013 and looked at being replaced where needed during March 2013 when I am back at my Villa. The Villa has had some building work, painting and decorating, repairs and continuous improvements over the last 6 months. My villa is located in a lovely, peaceful and tranquil Berber village on the outskirts of Essaouira. I personally have never hired a car when staying at my Villa, but use private taxis from my Villa or shared taxis and /or buses from the top of the road that my Villa is on. This is off course a personal affair of the preference of car hire or other transport options. It really depends on your plans when in Essaouira. Regards Alan Amess - January 2013 |
