The Costa Verde region

The Costa Verde is the name of the tourist area covering the districts of the Minho and most of the Douro Litoral. It stretches north from the City of Porto to the Spanish border which is a limited distance north of Viana do Castelo. It is an area highly populated with a large percentage of younger people. Inland, there are several historic and interesting cities, towns and villages that will fascinate the passing tourist. Particularly important are the tow other towns of Braga and Guimarães.

This area is the ancient beginnings of what today is known as the country of Portugal. The first town Braga is renown for its many imposing buildings and having been the original capital of the district during the time when the Peninsular was occupied by the Swevian tribe from the north of Europe. In this town there are some wonderful examples of medieval buildings together with its formidable castle.

The second town Guimarães has retained its many medieval buildings and its castle is imposing. The city was considered the capital of the district of Portucale after the tribes had been driven away. In 1139 Portugal's first King, Afonso Henriques, declared in the cathedral in this town of his intention to conquer the rights to a kingdom and convert and later enlarge the district known as Portucale into a Kingdom (Portugal) over which he would hence forth rule.

A very popular area is the Parque da Penada Gerêz, a nature reserve of charming beauty in the north-east corner on the border with Spain. here, a visitor may encounter many forms of wild life in their natural inhabitation and various species of plants and trees. Some of these species are unique to the Iberian Peninsular. An ideal destination for nature lovers and walkers.

Nearest village is Belinho, less than 1km away - nearest shop is 500m away. Nearest cafe is by the entrance to the complex.

Esposende is about 8km away - a lovely little town, which has most of the facilities you will need, including some great restaurants and an indoor pool.

Viana do Castelo is 15km away - a beautiful town that is well worth a visit.

"Modern and spacious family home, in the heart of authentic Portugal"

This is the perfect base for a family who want the comfort, convenience and space needed for everyone to rest, be entertained and discover Portugal at its best.

This region of Portugal is refreshingly authentic with unspoilt countryside, historic towns, culture and friendly people. The hosts left great info and tips on where to go and what to see, like towns, markets, festivals historical/cultural attractions, architecture. And very easy to get around (great roads).

I was slightly nervous about the language (I speak no Portuguese at all). Armed with the guide/phrase books provided by the hosts and a bit of a can-do attitude, I did remarkably well at buying, ordering and asking. Locals don't speak English on the whole but are always friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Lovely people. Such a relief.

Some days we took the easy option of just staying at home, enjoying the peace and quiet of the community. The house has lots and lots of space (bliss) to just chill out. The wonderful secluded sun terrace on the second floor has amazing, far-reaching sea views. We enjoyed relaxed, long lunches in the sun and shade of the garden, and evening BBQs (a bit of a local speciality) there too.

Within the small community that the house is in, the outdoor pool with its large grassy area was a real bonus. There is tennis and football too. We found some good walks directly from the house - we loved seeing how the locals lived. All free!

It is a very safe place to be and convenient as well, with all amenities close by. The hosts have made a real home from home for guests. It was our choice each day whether to venture far or stay near, and that made it an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable stay.
