The Costa Verde region
Like its name suggests, you can expect all shades of green in rolling hills, mountains and fertile valleys, where agriculture thrives due to heavy rainfall that makes this the greenest zone in Portugal. A coastline of unpolluted beaches welcomes the Atlantic Ocean, while visitors also enjoy the countryside, with its small farms, estates with splendid mansions that have been handed down within families for centuries, vineyards and forests of pines or oaks. The food is considered to be one of the country's best: from the most varied forms of cooking cod to apparently odd dishes, like tripas à moda do Porto (stewed tripes with beans) or rojões (where cumin is used to spice pork cooked in wine and garlic), not to speak of the wines and desserts.
Esposende / Apulia area
Esposende, the only county of the district of Braga bathed by the sea, has some of the loveliest beaches of the Green Coast, along an extension of 18 kilometres (11 miles) of sand, integrated in the Protected Landscape Area of the Esposende Coast. It begins at the beach of Apúlia, with its soft sand and scenery characterized by enormous dunes where a number of typical wind-mills may still be seen, and stretches to Ofir-Fão, with dense pinewoods framing the beautiful sandy stretch. At table, the coastal zone naturally offers products from the sea, such as roast rock-bass, grey mullet, flounder and shellfish, whereas inland visitors may find excellent roast pork and a succulent sarrabulho (dish made with pig's blood), served with the local vinho verde (green wine). Its important to visit the citys of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Barcelos.
