Enquire nowThe Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
The Department of the Aude drives a wedge between Ariege to the west and Pyrenees Orientales to the east to claim its corner of the French Pyrenees mountain range at the beautifully scenic Pays de Sault. Situated between the foothills of Ventoux, the Vaucluse Mountains and the Lure Mountain, the Pays de Sault offers an authentic and magnificent natural landscape. Fields of wheat give way to fields of lavender and forests of oak trees.
Sault is one of six French sites protected under the Unesco World Heritage Patrimony. Sault is also one of the major Lavender routes. An ideal point of departure to discover the Ventoux region.
The Pays de Sault is defined as two high plateaus. The 'Petit Plateau' reaches a height of 1934 metres at the Ourtizet peak and the neighbouring 'Grand Plateau' is dominated by the Tabe massif peaks of Saint-Barthélemy (2368m) and Soularac (2348m).
The Espezel area
The village makes an ideal base to explore the region both locally and farther a field. During the summer it is ideal for walkers and cyclists whilst in the winter it's a great base for winter sports, the nearest ski slope just 15 minutes away.
Fishing and horse riding are both available locally.
The village has two great restaurants, the award winning Auberge Du Pays Du Sault and the Hotel Restuarant Grau, which serves excellent food and has a super little bar. As ever in France, children are welcome in these places.
There's a good general shop in the village which opens every day plus a bakery, a butchers and a chemists. If you were to chose not to, you wouldn't need to uses your car during your stay - relying on the local amenities.
A children's play ground in the centre of the village is to be completed June 2011.
There's a lake in nearby Belcaire which during the summer is good for swimming. There are tennis courts here and a really good children's play area.
If you fancy a trip to the coast Canet Plage is less than a two hour drive.
Finally, I must say what a friendly village Esperzel is. It is very quiet and very beautiful.
