Home description
There is plenty in Eskdale and the surrounding area to see and do during your stay. The river Esk has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea - Irton Road station is just a five minute walk from Rigg Cottage.
There are five pubs in the valley, the Bower House Inn is the nearest, just five minutes walk away. All welcome children and serve real ales and a wide choice of good food.

The Cumbria/Lake District
You can always find a beautiful quiet spot in the Lake District and nowhere better for that than Eskdale. With dramatic mountains, pretty lakes, the native Herdwick sheep and a good range of local ales, the Lake District is a place to come back to time and time again.
Stretch your legs out with some fantastic ridge walks or get back to a long lost childhood just mucking about on the fellside making dens and having picnics. Go swimming in the cold rivers or take tea and cakes in one of the Lake District's many cafes. Visit a stately home and suffer from delusions of grandeur or scare yourself silly with an afternoon rock climbing up Napes Needle.
Eskdale area
Aside from walking in Eskdale there is plenty to occupy both adults and children alike.
The Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway follows a scenic seven mile route to the coast. Once at the coastal village of Ravenglass, Muncaster Castle is a short walk away and has wild gardens and an Owl Centre.
At Silecroft further up the coast you can go horse-riding along the beach, or if you prefer there is horse riding along the moors of Cold Fell.
Half an hour away is the bustling village of Coniston with its lake where you can take a rowing boat out, have a trip on a steam gondola or go canoeing.
Eskdale's nearest lake, though, is Wastwater in Wasdale - the next valley along. This is a deep brooding lake surrounded by the high Wasdale mountains including Scafell Pike.
How to get there
We're an hour and a half from the M6 motorway (J36).
