Home description
Situated midway between Eskdale and Ravenglass, Cragg Cottage profits from the better coastal weather and is within easy reach of the Western Lakeland fells and mountains. The house stands alone and offers comfortable accommodation for up to six people.
It is a great starting point for hundreds of walks and there are many good swimming spots along the River Esk. There is also fishing nearby, horse riding, stately homes and the Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway. Within a couple of miles are five pubs in Eskdale and two in Ravenglass.

The Cumbria/Lake District
With accessible mountains, beautiful lakes and tarns, woodlands and moorlands, the Lake District is a haven, not only for outdoor enthusiasts but for anyone who loves peace and beauty. The changing seasons bring with them different highlights – Spring is a time of new life with baby lambs, Wordsworth’s daffodils, and walks through bluebell woods. Lazing by the lake in Summer while others reach the highest peaks. The beautiful Autumnal colours and hopefully an Indian Summer. And winter with its wildness and feelings of satisfaction sitting in front of an open fire with a warm cup of tea after a day out on the fells.
Eskdale / Birkby area
Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea.
There are five pubs in Eskdale and two in Ravenglass. All welcome children and serve real ales and a wide choice of good food. The village shop, Eskdale Stores, sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. There is some reception for mobile phones on the Orange network.
