The Cumbria/Lake District
With its breathtaking mountain scenery, beautiful lakes and picturesque villages, the Lake District is a paradise, not only for outdoor enthusiasts but for anyone who loves peace and beauty.
The changing seasons bring with them different highlights. In Spring observe baby lambs, bouncing around Wordsworth's Daffodils; laze about by a lake in Summer, after walking amongst the fells; watch the beautiful colours appear in Autumn, whilst hopefully enjoying an Indian Summer and Winter boasts cold frosty days, warm snug evenings and sitting in front of an open fire with a large glass of wine.
The beautiful lakes with dramatic fells rising from their shores are just part of a great experience. The Lake District offers excellent local food, beer and fantastic activities that make a holiday here live long in the memory.
Eskdale is a wonderful starting point for hundreds of walks, either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk. The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The river flows from Scafell, at the top of the valley, down to the estuary at Ravenglass.
The famous La'al Ratty steam train takes you on leisurely seven-mile journey through the valley all the way to the coast. Eskdale has close links with the Roman History of Cumbria from the impressive ruins of Hardknott Fort to the bathhouses of Ravenglass. If history is what you're after, 'Muncaster Castle' is well worth a visit, especially for the kids and for something a bit different, head up to 'Burnmoor Stone Circle'.
There are five pubs in Eskdale, two in Ravenglass. and all welcome children (some even let dogs in too!). They all serve real ales and a wide choice of good food. The village shop, Eskdale Stores, sells a comprehensive range of goods to keep you stocked up on your visit.
