The Kyrenia District
Northern Cyprus enjoys typical Mediterranean weather with a long, hot dry summer which runs from early May through October, warm spring and autumn and a short winter running from January through March which is when the most rain falls. Summer temperatures can reach 35C and winter temperatures never fall below 14C. Frost is unheard of, other than high in the mountains. It is not uncommon for us to eat outside at Christmas and New Year.
Winter is a great time to visit if you like a more peaceful environment—it can be rainy but is not cold by British standards. Often days are sunny and then walking and sightseeing are a special delight. Spring is an especially beautiful time with warm sunny days and the hills covered in wild flowers. For many people, this is their favourite time to visit. Summer brings long hot days and warm nights. Ideal for lazing by the pool or on the beach, enjoying barbecues and midnight swims in your private garden. Warm temperatures continue into the autumn, gradually cooling down as November approaches although the sea stays warm.
Note: Northern Cyprus is not governed by the Euro or the Dollar so holidaying here is still good value!
Places not to miss There is a proposed new marina about 5 kilometres from the villa, go to the top of the road and turn left. Continue for around 5 kilometres until you come to a sign saying Molous inn, you can take the car right down to the site of the new marina. You come to a t junction, the right hand side will take you to the marina and the left to a sandy cove. If you park at the marina and take a walk to your left you will see some very unusual rock formations, this is a lovely area to take a picnic and swim, and you can swim to the sandy cove from here.
Other lovely places to see are Bellapais, Hilarion and Girne castles, Girne harbour and lots of other things to see but we have only done a few of them yet. My favourite was Salamis, about an hours drive, take a picnic and your swim things. Visit the Roman ruins which are wonderful then go down to the beautiful beach and have a swim and stay there for dinner. Also down the road is Alagdir beach, you can make an appointment there to go on a turtle watch, the turtles come out at night and lay their eggs
We also visited the monastery at the far end of the peninsular, that was a disappointment but just by it is the best beach I have ever seen, it is called golden sand beach and it is breathtaking but it takes about two hours through lovely countryside and well worth taking a drive and stopping off for a meal at one of the lovely restaurants on the way back.
A great restaurant bar has just opened, two min walk from the villa, great food and takeaway, also free wi fi. A great place to have a drink and meet the local residents.
Esentepe, Kyrenia / Kayim Site 7 area
Esentepe village has a petrol station, a good supermarket, restaurants etc but is situated up a very steep hill so only accessible by car. The hotel does Sunday lunch at around £8 and meals.Stevies bar just four miles from the villa do a great Sunday lunch, £9 for two courses and there are literally hundreds more to choose from. There are plenty of restaurants within a few minutes drive and the Golf Club is really good a bit more expensive but really luxurious. The spa is also very, very good with massage and lots of treatments (great whilst the men go and play Golf).
The Golf club looks like a Palace, it is so magnificent you cannot believe its a golf club, all marble and beautiful sitting out areas with uninterrupted views of the mountains, sea and surrounding countryside. Do not miss this even if it is just to go up and have a coffee. You are allowed in, no problem.
There is a water sport centre called Vogue about a ten minute drive away not far past Esentepe village turning, it also has a lovely beach, a large club and lively cabaret in the season. Also an outside disco. We only found it last time we were at the villa and we have not tried it yet. The Acupulco casino apparently also have lots to do and a great private beach, but have not tried it yet!
One of the most enjoyable days for us was our boat trip, at Kyrenia harbour there are catamarans going out for trips, we saw loads of Dolphins and lovely sights and enjoyed a really good meal on board for around £20 each.
How to get there
Travel to Northern Cyprus from the UK is very simple. There are connecting flights from many regional airports and you have a lot of options on routes.
It is possible to fly directly to Ercan airport with a short touchdown in Istanbul (no need to change planes). Alternatively you can route through Istanbul or other Turkish airports and onwards to Ercan.
The main carriers on these routes are Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Sun Express, Pegasus and Easyjet (into Istanbul). Flights take around 4.5 hours from the UK. Ercan airport is about 35 minutes from the villa.
Another option is to fly directly into Larnaca, in the Republic of Cyprus (Southern, Greek) (4 hours) and then have a taxi across the border to Northern Cyprus. The taxi journey takes about 1.5 hours and the border crossing is easy and does not even involve getting out of the taxi. British Airways, Cyprus Airways and Monarch all have very regular flights into Larnaca.
There are also many charter flight routings available during the main season, May—October.
Expedia: Expedia offers a wide range of scheduled flights to both Ercan and Larnaca
Turkish Airlines: Turkish Airlines offer service from various airports in the UK to Ercan via Istanbul. We have found them to be comfortable planes and a flexible schedule. When searching for flights on their website, look for Lefkosa as a destination (rather than the airport name, Ercan).
Cyprus Gold: Agent for Atlas Jet. Good offers on flights to Ercan Green Island Holidays: Another good source for flights to Ercan Cyprus Paradise: Good for flights to Ercan Easyjet: Easyjet have started a service from Luton to Istanbul. You can then connect to a Turkish, Atlas Jet or Cyprus Turkish Airlines flight to Ercan. Sometimes this can drastically reduce the price. Monarch Airlines: Monarch have introduced scheduled flights several times a week from London Luton into Larnaca Sun Express: Sun Express are a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa and have been in existence since 1989. They operate a modern fleet of aircraft. They offer flights from Stansted to Ercan (touchdown in Turkey) on Tuesdays and Saturdays
Pegasus: Pegasus are part owned by Air Lingus and have been in business since 1989. They have a fantastic record for being “on time” and they operate a modern and comfortable fleet of aircraft. They offer service to Ercan from Stansted to Ercan via Istanbul on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Prices are very reasonable and also offer a chance to stopover in Istanbul if you choose.
You will need to hire a car to really get the most out of your holiday. Car hire is unbelievably cheap—starting at around £12 per day and as we drive on the left in Northern Cyprus, there is no need to feel at all nervous. Petrol is also very cheap—roughly 1/2 the price of the UK.
We can arrange car hire for you and you can have the car delivered to you at the villa. Taxi transport from and to the airports is generally included in the price of a hire car. There is off road parking at the villa. For more details contact our website where you will find FULL details of the villa and car hire companies.

Guestbook for "Sunset Villa"
Hi Julie, Just a short e-mail to thank you for giving us the opportunity to stay in your beautiful villa. We have had a super time although it was extremely hot. I hope you will continue to rent this property out as we would like to take Mark's parents out to Cyprus next year. Thanks once again. Regards, Liz and Mark Date: 09/01/08 15:40:57
Thanks for a wonderful holiday, the villa was beyond our expectations and the sun sets and views had to be seen to be believed. Just wish you had not told us about the Kyrenia dog rescue centre as we have just promised to take two puppies over to England and they have to be in quarantine for six months first! Thanks again. Best wishes Yvoone and Jeremy April 2008
Hi both, just a few words to express our gratitude for all the assistance you gave us in getting transfers, flights etc.. The villa was just perfect and I enjoyed having a massage with Elaine she was wonderful. We are booking again next year without fail. Joan and Bill May 2008
