The Kyrenia District
Kyrenia (Girne) is the most famous and popular town in North Cyprus. The town is built around the pretty horseshoe harbour which has many bars and restaurants.
Dominating one end of the harbour is the 12th century Kyrenia castle which at night is lit up, the town sprawls out from the harbour and is home to a number of interesting museums and galleries.
The old town is located behind the harbour and has many shops, cafes and restaurants. At night, especially in the summer, the harbour is the place to be and to be seen.
Esentepe, Kyrenia / Turtle Bay Village area
Esentepe is a charming Mediterranean village of North Cyprus, as you drive up the winding road into the village you will see the stunning views of the crystal clear Mediterranean sea and the sandy Esentepe beach.
When you walk round this lovely old village you will be greeted by the friendly and welcoming Turkish Cypriots and European settlers who have realised their dream of the perfect place in the sun to live. Overseeing the back of the village is the 12th century medieval domed Antiphonitis church which is well worth a visit.
Just 5 mins drive from Turtle Bay Village is the spectacular Acapulco Hotel/Beach Club/Casino, for a small fee for parking you have such facilities on a large sandy beach as water sports, aqua park and tennis as well as the casino and evening entertainment.
Further along is what is regarded as the best beach by the locals, Turtle Beach which is a protected area where Loggerhead and Green turtles lay their eggs.
How to get there
North Cyprus airport is called Ercan, and is about 40 mins from Esentepe. All flights (Turkish) touch down in Turkey for about 40 mins arriving from the UK.
Ercan airport was refurbished 2 years ago and is a modern but small airport. It has 6 Duty free shops and 2 very good bars/restaurants. It is very rarely overcrowded, and parking outside is free.
The taxi rank is just outside the arrivals hall and taxis are available 24 hours a day. If a hire car has not been booked a taxi will cost about £40.
Alternatively fly direct to Larnaca Airport in the south and a £45 taxi fare will take you to the north.
Both ways are roughly the same time 5hours.
