The Kyrenia District

North Cyprus is around 40 miles from the Turkish mainland and outside the eurozone offering fantastic value. It is a hidden gem brimming with Crusader castles, wildflowers, unspoiled beaches and laidback charm - with an average of 340 days of sunshine a year. Spring flowers including rare wild orchids and cyclament are out in abundance in March/April/May in the quieter turkish side of Cyprus, thats slightly time-warped, but in a good way, without the over-development of many other Mediterranean destinations.

Here visitors follow in the footsteps of St. Paul to the well-preserved Roman city of Salamis with its stunning beaches, or take in the views from St. hilarion Castle, where Richard the Lionheart is said to have honeymooned.

Most will head to the beautiful ruined 13th century abbey in the ambrosial village of Bellapais, made famous by the writer Lawrence Durrell in his 1957 novel Bitter Lemons of Cyprus.

Kyrenia, is just 25 mins from the villa. Here in the harbour, a horseshoe of converted carob warehouses now house restaurants serving Turkish mezes and kebabs at outdoor tables on the quay - a beguiling scene in the sunshine with colourful fishing boats bobbing alongside. A boat ride is a must to see the dolphins

East of Kyrenia and its Venetian castle, forested hills make way for the slender "panhandle" of land known as the Karpaz Peninsula, a glorious natural wilderness fringed by deserted golden sandy beaches, so spectacular with its pure golden sand and stunning aspect. Karpaz is famously home to 500 wild donkeys and visited in summer by rare loggerhead and green turtles. Peter Lewis, brother of John Lewis has built a new marina there which is fantastic but not quite finished, easy new road from the villa direct to the marina, takes around 55 mins, also a visit to Boyaz whilst you are in that area, a lovely harbour village.

At Alagadir beach (just a few minutes drive from the villa) they can be seen from huffing and puffing up the beaches to lay their eggs 40 cm deep in the sand, with hatchlings make their way into the sea from July to September - you can make arrangements at this much protected site to watch the turtles at night laying their eggs, an absolutely unmissable event for all the family (but you must be quiet)!

For the children especially - pop across the field to the Esentepe Marina and watch the local fisherman feed the huge turtles that come every morning for their fishy treats- quite spectacular and the kids love it!

There are some amazing restaurants near the villa, too many to mention but a trip to Stevies and Joya restaurants are a must, plus the new Indian restaurant Jashan and the best chinese food I have ever tasted at the China garden - all details in our villa file!

Esentepe/Ayios Amvrosios

Esentepe village has,a good supermarket, restaurants etc but is situated up a very steep hill so only accessible by car. There is a new large supermarket within easy walking distance of the villa plus a bar and restaurant a few mins walk away which has wi fi free of charge. Stevies bar is just four miles from the villa do a great Sunday lunch, £9 for two courses and they do the best steak with pepper and garlic sauce I have ever tasted and my favourite creme brulee but there are literally hundreds more to choose from. Just found the Joya bar about 4 kms from the villa and wonderful food and sunday lunch. There are plenty of restaurants within a few minutes drive and the Golf Club is really good value and really luxurious. There is a new Indian Restaurant just a few minutes further down the main road called Jashan, this is fanatastic, the food is really good and reasonable. The spa is also very, very good with massage and lots of treatments (great whilst the men go and play Golf), ask for their special deals, we had a full body massage, use of all their facilities including their jacuzzi AND either lunch or dinner in the evening with wine for £50 each, it was superb value and the al la carte dinner and wine were excellent!

The Golf club looks like a Palace, it is so magnificent you cannot believe its a golf club, all marble and beautiful sitting out areas with uninterrupted views of the mountains, sea and surrounding countryside. Do not miss this even if it is just to go up and have a coffee. You are allowed in, no problem.

There is a water sport centre called Vogue about a ten minute drive away not far past Esentepe village turning, it also has a lovely beach, a large club and lively cabaret in the season. Also an outside disco. We only found it last time we were at the villa and we have not tried it yet. The ACULPULCO casino and hotel (you cannot miss it you pass it every time you go to Kyrenia).........just tried it for the first time this visit and we are kicking ourselves that we didn't go earlier, its AMAZING.......the best beach, the biggest outdoor pool I have ever seen, separate one with big slides etc for children, big play park for children too! restaurant on the beach, a massive Jacuzzi, its stunning and you could easily spend every day there, there is a small charge to go in but you get a bed and umbrella and all the facilities are free, there is also volleyball and tennis courts etc... Suggest you take a picnic as the food and drink is quite expensive but a truly wonderful place!

One of the most enjoyable days for us was our boat trip, at Kyrenia harbour there are catamarans going out for trips, we saw loads of Dolphins and lovely sights and enjoyed a really good meal on board for around £20 each.

Just found the village called Kalaman, go up around 11 am for walks in and around the village and then lunch in their fantastic restaurant, its very steep and full of beautiful ottoman houses and wonderful gardens, quite breathtaking and not to be missed. We hand you out a pdf for the villa which will include a host of wonderful places to go and see and restaurants to try BUT saying that there are hundreds we have not tried yet and the hotel called Cratos in Kyrenia is amazing, but read the comments in the guests book as it makes good reading too.
