The Costa de Lisboa/Lisbon region
All of these places are within one hours drive from the apartment in Ericeira.
If you stay anywhere on the Lisbon Coast Line I recommend at least a one day excursion to the heart of Lisbon, it reminds me of Paris twenty years ago, full of charm, history and character with so many interesting places to visit, being only just under a hour away from Ericeira.
Following the coast to the west direction there are many beautiful resorts, lovely beaches, and it is worth taking the train that runs the Cascais line from Cais do Sodre station along the scenic route to Cascais.
Lisbon's most monumental and historical area is Belem. It was from here that many of the great Portuguese explorers embarked on their voyages of discovery: Prince Henry the Navigator and the first overseas expedition to conquer Ceuta in Morocco, Bartholomeu Dias to round the Cape of Good Hope, the first voyages of Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama to discover the sea route to India, and Christopher Columbus stopped here on his way back to Europe after discovering the New World. But the best place for a drink and pastries is the cafe Antiga Confeitaria de Belem which has been serving delicious custard tarts in its rooms adorned with tiles since 1841
,Estoril lies less than 25km west of Lisbon and is probably best known for its casino. One of Europe's largest, it was the inspiration for the first of Ian Fleming's James Bond books, "Casino Royale."
Cascais situated close to the sea and traditionally a fishing village, Cascais enjoyed an important period of development in the 14th century, when it was a major stopping off point for boats on their way to Lisbon, turning it into a very busy port at that time.
It was, however, in the second half of the 19th century, when sea bathing became a popular activity, that Cascais was given the impetus that transformed it into a very fashionable summer resort. The great driving force behind this transformation was the king of Portugal, Dom Luís I, who, in 1870, converted the Fortaleza da Cidadela into the summer residence of the Portuguese monarchy. The king's example was immediately copied by the nobility, who built palaces and extremely beautiful villas in the town, where they spent the hottest season of the year, completely transforming the appearance of the former fishing village.
Cascais and the Estoril Coast offer glorious beaches and a vibrant nightlife.
You can not visit the Lisbon Coast region without visiting Sintra is both a town and a municipality in the Lisbon Coast/ Estoril Coast of Portugal. Its spectacular setting, 28km from Lisbon houses a Royal Palace, used by generations of Portuguese royalty prior to the 1910 revolution. The surrounding hills are surmounted by the remains of the Moorish Castle and by the nineteenth-century Pena Palace. Historic Sintra is a heritage patrimony sight declared by UNESCO.
Mafra - 15mins from the apartment.
The impressive Palácio de Mafra was commenced in 1717 in the reign of Dom João V. The initial project was less ambitious in size. The King committed himself to his church to build a new monastery for 13 Franciscan friars as a seal of his faith and in penance for his well-known sexual extravagances. During its long history the Palace has been mainly used by the Royal Family as a home when hunting in its adjoining forest for deer and wild boar. The monastery was abandoned in 1834 after Dom João V had dissolved all religious orders. The Royal quarters were last used by Dom Manuel II as an overnight resting-place on his escape to England in 1910 aboard his yacht moored at the nearby port of Ericeira.
