About this location
The Central Portugal region
Lisbon is 45 minutes drive away, so is Sintra. Guided sightseeing tours, gastronomic trips, winery visits, dolphin watching, Fado nights, Lisbon clubbing.
Ericeira - often called the Mecca of Surf - has become one of the most important surfing towns in Europe and was excelled recently as the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe. While offering excellent conditions for the practice of this fascinating sport, Ericeira has managed to retain its charm and continues to be a fishermen’s village full of history and a center of commerce and gastronomy, famous for its fresh fish and seafood. Ericeira dates from the 12th century, and still today you can admire historic buildings with architecture of great quality and beauty.
Evenings in Ericeira start with a great meal. Fresh fish and seafood dishes are specialties in more than 30 restaurants. But you'll find also a great variety of meat, pizza, burgers, just name it. After dinner walk around in the center and have a tasty Caipirinha or a Mojito in one of the many bars. Nightlife goes on until early morning hours. The Ouriço nightclub, located in front of the Atlantic, is the oldest still operating nightclub in Portugal and celebrated its 50 years recently.
World Surfing Reserve: The waves of Ericeira have been announced in February 2011 as new protected area by local Portuguese Tourism board and Save the Waves foundation. The approved area of Ericeira's World Surfing Reserve covers about 5km between Matadouro Beach and São Lourenço Beach. This little piece of Portugal's 943km of continental coastline (Madeira and Azores add another 917km) contains a highly concentrated group of quality surf breaks, several of them world-class.
Our Beaches: Famous surf beaches when the swell pumps or traditional sun seekers oases when its calm, Ericeira has it all. Europe's first approved World Surfing Reserve, with standout Waves like Coxos, Reef, Pedra Branca or Ribeira d'Ilhas is only one more excellence seal for Ericeira's beaches. Four Blue Flag decorations in 2010 proof not only top water and air quality, but also dedication to educational environmental information, handicapped persons access facilties and modern infra structures.
