The County Fermanagh region

Enniskillen, originally "Cathleen's Isle", is the county town of the Fermanagh Lakelands, and is unique in being an island town. It is surrounded by the lakes and rivers of the Erne Waterway., and was the location for the 2013 G8 Summit. It is typical of the laid back attitude of the people here that this was the most peaceful summit ever to take place.

The lakelands here are quietly beautiful and unspoilt, with water sports being mainly carried out at the various activity centres, and the pace of life on the water being slow. Enniskillen is the most westerly town in the United Kingdom, just a stone's throw from the border with the Republic of Ireland, so a holiday based here also offers the opportunity of dipping into Yeats County, Sligo, and visiting the beaches of Donegal, which are less than one hour away by car.

Here, you will encounter "Fermanagh Time", a kind of delay that has come to be generally expected...Fermanagh is special- it's peaceful and beautiful, and people want to stay , both the young of the county and those who are visitors to it.

Enniskillen is the County town of the Lakelands, and has much to explore. The Buttermarket craft and design centre is home to our local artists, jewellry makers, potters , fishing fly creators and workers in textiles.

Forthill Park houses Coles Monument which you can climb to get a fantastic view of the town.

We have 3 National Trust properties at Florencecourt, Crom Estate, home of Blandings, and Castle Coole, just a mile from Dromard.

There is a seven screen Omniplex and the lovely Ardhowen Theatre right by the lake just 2 miles from Dromard.

The Marble Arch showcaves are totally unspoilt and offer a completely unique experience, and the local limestone landscape offers lovely river and bogland walks. This is a European Geopark which ensures the protection of our blanket bogs.

In the summer season we have opportunities to take a boat trip on Lough Erne, on the Kestral or the Lady of the Lake, the former trip offering a 30 minute stopover on the Devenish Island Monastic site.

We have numerous festivals throughout the year. The Guinness Classic coarse fishing festival in May sees the county invaded by fishermen from across the world and every available jetty in use all around town and county.

In August we have a Vintage Car Weekend, and the theatre festival is in March of each year, as of course are our Saint Patricks Day Celebrations.

In 2014 we have our 3rd Annual Samuel Beckett Festival which is already gaining an international reputation and attracting world class actors, writers and companies. There are rumours of a "Wilde Weekend" also taking place. Both Wilde and Beckett are Enniskillen educated at Portora Royal School.
