The Florida region
Englewood has lots of quaint entertainment and restaurants. There are "Drum Circles" on Englewood Beach on Sunday nights - enjoy people watching, trying your own drums, watching the sun set over the gulf. There is "Bluegrass Music in the Park" on Monday nights (during the winter season) - bring your chairs and enjoy sitting under old live oaks with swaying spanish moss while watching the sun go down over the water, listening to some great miusic.
Englewood is tucked away from the main tourist areas, so you'll enjoy the leisurely pace here. It's an easy 1/2 hour drive up to Venice where you'll find lots of shopping and restaurants and another half hour will take you to Sarasota (the cultural capital of South West Florida) A drive south about 3/4 hour will take you to Punta Gorda for a variety of pubs/restaurants and shopping and Fort Myers about another 1/2 hour. It's a very easy drive (about 3 hours) to Orlando for all that DisneyWorld has to offer.
There are three beaches - Englewood Beach is a 5 minute drive, (3.4 miles) Stump Pass Park (my favourite) is about 7 minutes, and Blind Pass is about 10 minutes. You can rent a boat and tour the inland waterway or rent a boat and captain for fishing expeditions if you're unsure on your own. There will be suggestions, recommendations in the house when you arrive.
There is a public golf course about 5 minutes away with easy reservations (good rates as well as special afternoon rates), and lots of shopping and restaurants in 'old Englewood' on Dearborn Street.
