The Marche / Abruzzo / Abruzzo region
Abruzzo is one of Italy's last wildernesses. Dominated be the Apennine mountain range, one third of Abruzzo territory is dedicated to National Parks. The parks are one of Europe's most important nature reserves and offer an extensive network of trails with opportunities for riding, trekking, and climbing. The Adriatic is Abruzzo's eastern border with miles of clean, sandy beaches. There is an array of public beaches from busy to secluded.
Abruzzo is also home to some of Italy's best preserved Medieval and Renaissance hilltop towns. Some towns cling to the sides of steep mountains, unchanged and mostly undiscovered. It is thanks to historical isolation by the mountains that the natural beauty of Abruzzo has remained intact. Due to frequent invasions many of the towns are fortefied and built for protection. There are also numerous castles throughout the region in various states of repair.
Between the mountains and the sea, the land is fertile and most of it is farmed. The cuisine of Abruzzo is distinct from other regions of Italy. Handmade pastas are the norm and there is less use of tomatoes here than in other regions. A good variety of fish is supplied by the Adriatic and from the mountains comes lamb and wild boar. Abruzzo also produces saffron and truffles. For the most part the cooking is simple with the flavors kept fresh and clean. Abruzzo is also renouned for its local wines: red is Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and white is Trebbiano d'Abruzzo.
Elice area
Elice is dominated by the Barrone castle at its centre. It is a small, quiet town with a bakery, market and local bar. There is also a small 12th century church in its main square where a farmer's market is present every Thursday. Down the hill are a variety of restaurants, bars and markets. Pescara, with its beaches, restaurants and nightlife, is less than a half hour away. Locally, there are many beautiful towns to discover. The countyside is dramatic and dotted with historic villages and larger towns like Penne and Atri that offer many cultural and artistic attractions.
The climate is pleasant with mild springs and autumns and hot summers. Throughout the summer months there are festivals in the small towns and villages where you can sample local cuisine, crafts and music. Elice has its own festival in August celebrating scripelle (a type of crepe).
