The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region

This is an area of huge variety, with thriving ports, bustling cities and a vast agricultural industry as well as textile and shoe manufacturing. Not far from the tourist centres, traditional Spain re-emerges where historic towns are set amid superb scenery and the rural pace of life remains undisturbed. The people remain fiercely proud of their region, their history, their traditions and their culture and provide a good mix with modern amenities.
Here you can discover another part of Spain..........beautiful sierras with officially marked walking routes, inland villages with local markets, wine sampling in the Bodegas and once you've tasted the diversity of the region, you will probably return and gradually get to know the hidden corners! The tourist information centres often provide leaflets in English.
The larger towns & cities, beaches, water parks, theme parks, sea world parks are also easily accessible.
There are many towns and villages worth exploring in the surrounding valleys.
Local magazines (in English) and leaflets will be available in the villa so you can make the most out of your holiday and please as many of the guests as possible.
EL PENON: this mountain is footsteps behind the villa and good for walking & wonderful views. For those looking for a bigger challenge, you can reach the top within a few hours.
ALICANTE: (25 mins) A fabulous City & fantastic nightlife, abundance of restaurants & shops, beautiful marina overlooked by the Castle, museums and lovely sandy beaches plus children's indoor/outdoor play areas.
GOLF COURSES: the closest being Alenda Golf with its new Club House, just 20 mins away.
ELCHE: (15 mins) This ancient University City is the largest palm tree park in Europe and has the famous Huerto del Cura botanical garden park. Old town and the well-known El Corte Ingles new Dept Store. The 'shoe capital' claiming to have the largest shoe factory open to the public in Europe. Safari-park, go-karting and children's indoor/outdoor play areas & ice skating!
NOVELDA: (15 mins) Quaint and beautiful St Mary Magdalene's Sanctuary and Mola Castle.
BEACHES: El Altet & plenty of other sandy beaches around Alicante are 25 mins drive. El Campello & Guardamar, gently shelving with golden sand & delightful promenades lined with restaurants (40mins)
SANTA POLA: (40mins) a large coastal town with its beautiful open beach and marina as well as a fantastic theme park - Pola Park!
BENIDORM in the north and TORREVIEJA in the south are great for shopping and nightlife, water parks, theme parks and sea world parks. Easily accessible in 45 mins.
The City of MURCIA is a 1 hour drive (good motorways) - a wonderful place to visit - numerous historical buildings including the Cathedral de Santa Maria and fabulous shops.
GUADALEST: A beautiful mountain village surrounded by a maze of narrow streets and a moorish castle. Quaint shops, museums and restaurants with a spectacular view of the lake, from the top (1hr 45mins).
SIERRA DE ESPUNA, the areas highest mountain, is south west of the city of Murcia. It is one of Spain's renowned natural parks, a wilderness of dramatic peaks & pine forests offering scenic drives, serious climbing and superb walking.
The Elche / Aspe area
Aspe is a traditional Spanish town yet with many modern amenities, 25mins from Alicante. It is surrounded by vineyards, olive and almond groves. The old town centre has recently been renovated and pedestrianised. It is very pleasant to walk through the narrow lanes, discovering something new around the corner. It has a population of 11,000 appx but still retains its small and friendly feel.
It is an 8mins drive into the centre of Aspe from the house. There is an excellent daily (except Sundays) indoor market selling fresh fruit, vegetables, cakes, meat and fish - in fact many stalls sell other food produce too! Apart from the quaint little bakeries that appear everywhere, there are also two supermarkets: Mercadona and Hiperber. The local street market is on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
You will also find some restaurants, tapas bars, bars (two English-run), two internet cafes, ice-cream parlours, a creperie, a little theatre/cinema, museum, a few churches, squares, town hall, parks, fountains, shops, post office, sports centre with indoor/outdoor pool and tennis courts a couple of Clubs/Discos. Alenda Golf Club is 10mins drive from Aspe.
The nearest bar, El Rancho is 3mins drive, serving tapas and great barbecued food. You can see it down the valley from the house! Possibly a take-away paella could be organised! The owners are very friendly. They keep a range of animals and are sometimes happy for children to assist them during feeding time!
Hondon de las Nieves is a small village just 5mins drive. It has a pretty pedestrianised centre with some bakeries, a few bars and restaurants and small shops, as well as some bodegas for wine tasting. Further east is its sister village, Hondon de los Frailes. They have both recently invested in public amenities.
In between the two villages, 10mins drive, is La Finca restaurant, run by a Dutch family, which also has an outdoor pool for public use.

Guestbook for El Penon
We had a fantastic time at the house. The outside space was perfect for us all! Thanks again for a lovely time!
Just returned from a 2 week holiday at El Penon. What a treat it was perfect from the moment we arrived. We were met by a lovely lady Joan (who showed us round the villa) and her husband Jack. They were so helpful & kind as was Antonio who came and looked after the pool. There were 9 adults and 4 children aged 1yr - 8yrs. We had a fantastic time and I would strongly recommend the villa to families of all ages and we would love to return. Best holiday ever! Thanks Teri
