With over 300 days of sunshine a year the Costa Blanca coast is the ideal place for holiday all year around. Alicante is the second largest city in the region and is a living city all year. The city has a fantastic marina, restaurants with exquisite Mediterranean cuisine, bars and many Spanish and international fashion stores. To see the city from the top visit the Castillo de Santa Bárbara which was constucted in the 1500 century. At the bottom of the hill you will find the old city which is all white. It is a must to take a walk on the Explanada de España lined by palm trees and paved with marble floors. Especially in the evening it is a meeting point for many people who sit and talks.
In the area around Alicante there are much to explore. In the area you will find many golf courses some of them constructed by famous golf players. For wine lovers you will find many interesting wine farms to visit in the inland.
Especially North of Alicante you will find many theme parks, water lands and zoo's. In the mountains you will find magnificent views and cosy small Spanish towns, especially Guadalest is wortwhile a visit. The city was of strategic importance for the Moors when they defended themselves and some of the castle still remains. On the way back from Guadalest visit Villajoyosa which is known as the chocolate city where the brand Valor originates and has own chocolate museum. North of Alicante it is also worthwhile to visit the dripstone caves Cuevas de Canalobre in Busot. Driving to the caves, the views are stunning as the boundless, barren countryside stretches out as far as the eye can see below and inside the caves it is magnificent to see the dripstones. North of Benidorm is also the picturesque city Altea situated.
Especially South of Alicante it is very healthy to live due to the many salt lakes, which makes the air dry and therefore good for people suffering for among others asthma and rheumatism. At different locations it is possible to take healthy salt baths or mud and salt baths. There are many interesting cities to visit among others Orihuela and Murcia which both architectural wise are strongly influenced by the days of the Moors. In a couple of years the new Paramount Pictures Theme Park will open near Murcia.
At the whole coast line there are kilometres of broad white golden sand beaches. At many places there are good conditions for surfing and kiteskiing.
The Elche / Valverde, Alicante Province area
Valverde is a nice and cosy little Spanish town. In the centre of the town at the church square there are several good Spanish restaurants. Valverde noted for its rural character and its Mediterranean-type agriculture, especially the almond and pomegranate trees.Valverde is situated between the two cities of Elche and Santa Pola.
Santa Pola is a coastal fishing and tourist town. The centre of Santa Pola is very cosy with many good fishing and paella restaurants. At Wednesdays (only during summer) and Saturdays there is an outdoor market in front of the market hall. The town has an important salt evaporation pond which produces salt for industrial use. In the salt lakes you will often see colonies of flamingoes.
Just south of Santa Pola is La Marina. In the Southern part of La Marina at the camping area there is a huge waterpark and playground.
Elche is world famous for its palm trees and was in 2001 declared UNESCO World Heritage site. Everywhere you look there are palm trees and there are several huge palm tree parks to visit, some for free and the finest with an entrance fee.
Especially the beaches just South of Santa Pola are really child friendly and at the same time the perfect place for wind surfing. In 2009 the World Championship was organized by Windsurf Club Santa Pola at Gran Playa.
