Home description

Discover the beautiful green Canary Island of La Palma, famous for its spectacular walks. Stay in our apartment in a semi-rural location on the sunny west side of the island, between the two towns of El Paso and Los Llanos. The apartment consists of the entire ground floor of a two-storey 200 (approx) year old-style Canarian house in a very quiet spot. We are the English owners (Sue and Finlo), and we live on the first floor. You may find us in the garden or pool occasionally but otherwise they are for your private use.

We have recently built a studio log cabin (sleeps 1-2) in our garden which is available at a very reasonable price for short lets only when the apartment is not booked. Please email us for availability and more details.

La Palma is a very relaxed and laid-back island where everyone prefers to take life gently. There are lots of festivals (fiestas) (in particular Carnival - the two weeks before Lent) when there are processions and street parties. The rest of the time people prefer to socialise in their homes and this is not a place to come if you want to spend your holiday clubbing.

The La Palma region

The Berlitz Guide book describes La Palma as the most beautiful island on earth. The locals call it 'La Isla Bonita' and the other word they use to describe it is 'tranquila'. It has one of the largest volcanic craters in the world, an attraction for many walkers, and is claimed to be one of the most mountainous islands in the world. Although It is the greenest of the Canary Islands, visitors can expect around 300 sunny days every year. Many keen walkers choose La Palma for a holiday because it presents some famous (and possibly challenging) walks, one round the volcanic crater (Taburiente) and the other walking 'The Route of The Volcanoes' down the spine of the island. Although never colonised by the British, the British introduced both vines and bananas to the island. You can visit local vineyards and sample the produce. Because the island is so steep, produce ranges from bananas at sea level, avocados and citrus fruit and cherries, apples, pears and nuts at altitude. There is an Almond Blossom Festival early every Spring and in the autumn a Wine and Chestnuts festival when the wines from the previous year are tested interspersed with delicious roasted chestnuts.

There is less mass tourism here than on most of the other Canary Islands and it is more suitable for people looking for a get-away-from-it-all holiday than pubs and discos. The beaches are pleasantly empty - please note they are black, volcanic sand so don't be too startled the first time you see them.

El Paso area

El Paso is in the geographical centre of the island and is home to the national park of La Caldera de Taburiente with some of the most stunning walks in the world. The starting points for several walks are within 20 minutes' drive.

This small town has a population of around 8,000 people spread over quite a wide area. There are two old churches to visit if you wish and a silk museum. Silk used to be a major industry on the island and there are still many mulberry trees around this area. A dessert made with mulberries is a particular delicacy.

El Paso has a major fiesta every third summer; this is called a romeria and involves almost everyone around dressing up in local, traditional, costume and a long procession with many floats and bands and dancers following a statue of the Virgin which is taken from a tiny church in the pine forests and brought down to the main church in El Paso where it spends the night and then there is a rather more sober and smaller procession the following day to walk her back to her niche. As soon as the dates for this fiesta are known, they will be added to this site.

Los Llanos is two minutes away by car or approximately 25-30 minutes on foot and is ideal for strolling, shopping and dining this city is the biggest on the island after Santa Cruz de la Palma, the capital, which is on the east side. The town square of Los Llanos has wonderful outdoor cafes where you can have a drink or snack and watch the world go by. Visit the centuries' old cathedral or enjoy occasional street entertainment in the main square. There is a large supermarket in El Paso for all your basic self-catering requirements and the Spar chain has many medium-sized and small supermarkets all over the island.

The nearest beaches are at Puerto Naos and Tazacorte Puerto, both approximately 20 minutes away by car. It is said that Tazacorte enjoys the best climate in the whole of Europe. Both beaches have long uncrowded, unspoilt beaches of volcanic sand.

How to get there

Thomson fly direct from London Gatwick and Manchester to Santa Cruz de la Palma (code is SPC). If these airports are not convenient for you, you can fly into Gran Canaria (LPA) or Tenerife and take a local flight on Binter Canarias or Islas Airways. Or fly via Madrid.

We can arrange car hire for you and the driver will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your holiday home so you can relax on the flight and not worry about finding your way here.

Further details indoors:
The garden flat is converted from the lower part of an old Canarian house (guestimates 200 years old), and the bedrooms are cool even in summer. The kitchen-diner is light and airy and has plenty of working space. There is a full electric oven and hob (no gas in the house at all - no bottles to change). The shower room has a proper shower unit. The flat is self-contained with its own front door leading off a small terrace. There is no indoor access between this flat and the one upstairs where the owners live and you will have complete privacy.

The apartment has a large kitchen-dining-living area. This part is a modern extension to the original house . In addition to the usual kitchen equipment, there is a full oven, not often found in rental apartments. But, if you don't feel like cooking, local restaurants will deliver

The three bedrooms are built out of stone and are very cool in the hot summer. On the odd chilly winter evening, you might want to use the marble radiators. The double-bedded and single-bedded rooms lead off the living area. There are steps up to the third, twin-bedded room and the modern shower room.

We have recently built a log cabin/studio in our garden. If you rent the apartment, this studio is available for your use as a lounge with satellite-tv and DVD player for no additional cost.

Further details outdoors:
The flat is reached via a short flight of outside steps. The flight of steps leads on down to the beautiful garden, carefully tended by the owners. You can:-

Pick your own fruit and veg in season
Swim and laze by the pool 24/7
Eat al fresco either in the garden or on the covered terrace
Barbecue

The house is in a cul-de-sac of four houses and all our neighbours are Palmeran so you feel part of the local community. The house is set in its own grounds with a swimming pool and parking area. In the garden there is a shady spot under an grand old avocado tree where you can eat outside. There is a barbecue available for you to use. A small terrace leads off from the front door of the apartment and then a few steps down will take you to the garden with citrus trees, strawberries, and a great variety of flowers and shrubs. The main garden path leads you on down to the large pool, ideal for both swimming and sunbathing. There is a WC in this area and also an outdoor shower.
