The Settat/Safi region
Azemmour, 75km south of Casablanca & approx 20km north of centre of the port city of El Jadida, is relatively unknown to tourists. Its large and ancient Medina is a maze of winding passageways, with a myriad of unique doors and porticos and large colourful murals created annually by local and visiting international artists. The Oum Er-Rbia river, the second largest in Morocco, flows 555km from the Middle Atlas to Azemmour where it meets the Atalantic waves at Azemmour Plage which is great for surfing...surfers, kitesurfers please note!! The beach is either a 25 minute walk or a short 10 dirham petit taxi ride away. If you intend spending the day at the beach, or strolling along the miles of more often than not deserted sands, you might like to take a picnic. A 4 dirham bus ride will take you to El Jadida to explore the souk, the Cité Portugaise and the cavernous space of the renowned cistern, or visit one of the many seafront cafes and take in one of the amateur football (soccer) games being played on the beach...serious business!
Azemmour, in the Province of El Jadida, is a vibrant community where the daily life of the Medina is played out much as it has been for centuries. Weavers working their silk threads or wool yarn on their wooden looms, carpenters with their workshops spilling out onto the streets, women and girls pounding their laundry at the communal tap, cloth covered bread dough on wooden boards being taken to the nearest communal bread oven. Outside of the Medina there's the Tuesday market covering a huge area near Azemmour Halte, the train station, and the Saturday market starting at the grand taxi rank, winding around the streets at the bottom of the hill leading to the central mosque. Everything you need for cooking can be found not only at these markets but also at the daily souk (market) a short walk from the Medina.
