The Andalucia region

The Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema is located between the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga with an area of 51,695 hectares in the western zone of the Betic Cordillera. Land border between the Muslim kingdom of Granada and Castile between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, this mountain was the site of frequent fights. This raises a very concentrated human habitat, where the villages are located on the summits and slopes being fully integrated into the landscape.

This unique cultural framework, typical of many civilizations belt of mountains that surround the Mediterranean, persists today despite the passing of time.A total of 13 municipalities are included to a greater or lesser extent, on the surface of the Park: Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Villaluenga del Rosario, Benaocaz, Ubrique, El Bosque, Prado del Rey and Gastor of the province of Cádiz and Benaoján, Montejaque, Cortes de la Frontera and Ronda Jimena de Líbar in the province of Malaga.

This Cadiz mountains rises between 600 and 1600 m. on the surrounding valleys and depressions. It is an area of ??rugged relief with vertical-walled valleys as the "Green Throat", whose depth reaches 400 m. There are also frequent caves or caves among which are the "Complex Hundidero-Cat", the biggest cave in Andalusia or the "Cave of the Pool", known worldwide for its prehistoric remains. Despite the presence of man since ancient times, the mountain range contains a large mass of natural vegetation typically Mediterranean oaks, gall oaks, carob and olive trees.

In the shadows of the Sierra del Pinar is located a magnificent forest of fir, the best preserved today in this exclusive fir of the Serrania de Ronda. In nearby hills are clumps or isolated specimens of this species, testifying to its former extent. The visit to Pinsapar and other enclaves and Park Reserve Areas can be performed only at certain times of the year and limiting the number of visitors. Sometimes it must also be accompanied by a guide.

Elms, willows and poplars are the species that form the characteristic gallery forests along the course of rivers and streams, and can be seen for example in the upper reaches of River Forest. All these species to a total of 90 are represented in the Botanical Garden Forest, which offers two alternative routes. Numerous species of birds inhabit the park, though perhaps for its majestic size and flight are the predators and scavengers that come to our attention more. Of these, highlights the vulture, having here one of the largest colonies of Europe. While most cultural heritage comes from the Muslim civilization, there are many Roman remains of ancestors of the current cities' Iptuci "(Prado del Rey)," Ocuri "(Ubnque)," Acinipio "(Round) ... Also, and land use practices very closely related to the natural environment have reached our days almost intact. Among the old craft practices is the production of wool blankets in Grazalema (also manufactured ponchos and scarves). The leather and garment leather are typical of the Sierra Ubrique, Prado del Rey and Cortes de la Frontera. In the latter work also highlights the cork, handbags, umbrellas and roofs of heather, the Arabic tiles and copper jewelry. An original artisan product is gastoreña bagpipe, musical instrument worked on a cow's horn, typical of Gastor. The straw, esparto and honey are other important resources. The regional food is another important cultural richness. In general, all people can taste the homemade sausages. The "soup Villaluenga 'is very comforting in winter. In Benaocaz are made the "sighs" exquisite sweets made in the oven, and the popular porridge. It is also delicious pastries of Grazalema, where they make almond amarguillos, goblets and typical Grazalema soup. The sweet wine of Montejaque and the must of Prado del Rey are the most traditional wines of the area. Other typical products include cake chicharrones, cheese from sheep, etc.. Legacy of the past also are the traditional festivals and fairs, held mostly during the summer. Zahara de la Sierra, the streets and squares are decorated with reeds and grasses during the big party: The Corpus. The bull rope, typical of Grazalema, Benaocaz Villaluenga and is held in August. In Ubrique takes place "burning Gamones" May 3, on this day, the villagers burn the tips of Asphodel making them explode.
