The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands after Tenerife but, unlike it’s three large neighbours, it is still relatively undeveloped as far as tourism is concerned. There are large centres of tourism such as Jandia, Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo but the rest of the island is still mostly unspoilt.
The main characteristics of the island are it’s miles and miles of virtually white sand beaches, rugged volcanic terrain and the breeze which helps to keep the ambient temperature from becoming unbearable.
The secret of the wonderful sand on Fuerteventura is it’s proximity to Africa. At only 100 kilometres (around 60 miles) from Morocco, it is the closest of the Canary Islands to Africa and it is from the Sahara that all the sand has come. Through tens of thousands of years the winds, that still caress the island, have been carrying across their tiny packages of sand and depositing them all over the island's shores transforming the otherwise black, volcanic beaches to wonderful stretches of golden white. The current result of this process is over 100 miles of some of the best beaches in the world.
Fuerteventura's position places it on a similar latitude to Florida and Mexico which, consequently, provides similar weather conditions - but without the hurricanes! The breeze helps to maintain a bearable temperature and humidity during the 3,000 hours of sunshine that bathe the island each year producing an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
Naturism is accepted throughout the island on the main beaches or, if preferred in the thousands of secluded coves dotted around the coast. Most naturists prefer the use of the hundreds of ‘lobster pots’ built over the years and scattered all around the beaches as they provide a certain degree of privacy plus protection from the breeze.
El Cotillo is still a relatively small fishing village and a very relaxing place. There are no noisy clubs and bars. This is not the place to come for clubbers! The main features of this village are the beaches and the tranquility - this is the place to come to unwind in the peace and quiet.
We have two harbours in the village. The old harbour (el muelle chico) is, as you’d expect, at the heart of the traditional part of the village with the new harbour at the seafront of the newer part of the village. Neither harbour is large by any stretch of the imagination but then neither is the village. The new harbour is from where the local fishermen set sail and land their catches but the old harbour is still important to village life as it is the centre of many village activities such as the fiesta in August.
El Cotillo does not boast a shopping centre or even trendy shops but it does have numerous restaurants and bars offering a variety of cuisines, ambiences and locations. Indeed, we have calculated that during a fortnight’s stay in El Cotillo one could dine in a different establishment every night and still not have visited them all!
If this is not enough for you, there is a regular bus service to Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario. If you intend to hire a car during your stay, Corralejo is only 20 minutes drive away and Rosario is around 40 minutes.
For those of you with an adventurous nature, the Atlantic Ocean provides waves for surfing and the constant breeze provides interesting conditions for wind surfers & kite boarders along the Surfer's Beach. Scuba diving is also pursued at various places all around the island.
If you have come to relax, the lagoons will be the place for you with it's large sweeping white sandy beaches and safe swimming.
The numerous coves all along the coast provide lots of privacy for naturists and those who wish to 'get away from it all'.

The apartment was excellent, everything we needed to have a perfect chill out break.
A fully fitted kitchen allowed us to cook what & when we wanted.
The balcony was great to sit out on in the evening to have a drink and watch the world go by, although it overlooked a childrens playground this did not deter from the view. You can see the sea and watch the sunsets, fantastic.
The proprietors lived on the premises and were fantastic, any problem and it was sorted straight away and they were really genuinely, friendly.
TV, Sky, kimg size double bed, comfy seating area what more could we ask for?
We were so impressed that we have booked our breaks with them for next year.
