Eindhoven area
Eindhoven is one of the oldest cities in The Netherlands and has a very interesting history. It received city rights back in 1232. A lively cigar and textile industry developed along the Dommel River. Another centennial business started when Anton Philips in those difficult years of 1890 personally toured half of Europe to find customers who to sell the light bulbs to. Eindhoven has become 'The City of Light'.
It is the country’s fifth-largest city. However the economy of the Eindhoven region is the second largest in the Netherlands. This city is widely regarded as one of the hotspots of high technology in Europe. As much as forty percent of the Dutch invest in research and development in this region. The city of Eindhoven is a centre of innovation and design. In less than 100 years the city developed from a small town to become a great and prosperous city.
As a result of the industrial developments during the last 100 years, you’ll find a mixture of architecture; the old mansions of the Villa Park stand in beautiful contrast to the modern architecture.
On the cultural level; the ‘Van Abbe museum’ one of the worlds leading museums of art, the ‘Witte Dame’ (White Lady) the rehabilitated old Philips factory, a beautiful industrial monument, a synergetic model of both exchange and binding between design, art, information, knowledge and technology. Here you’ll find the Design Academy, Temporary Art Centre (home to over 80 creative studios), Philips Design, city library, visual arts, commercial functions and the known ‘central fragment’, the most distinctive intervention, the passage as a momentum of a new urban axis that connects the inner-city via the ‘Lichtplein’ (Light square) with the Philips Football stadium. • There are also several great shopping areas for clothing and other goods, including De Heuvel Galerie and De Bijenkorf. • Evoluon ‘The Flying Saucer’ building used for conferences and conventions • Furthermore Eindhoven is a green city, with outstretched parks and woods where you can make long walks or bicycle. • Its location is also convenient as it is close to other cities as Breda, Utrecht and Maastricht and other countries as Belgium and Germany.
