The lower floor provides an open plan living/dining/kitchen area with an attractive jettied sitting area affording superb views down the waters of Leith – an ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down. Ornithologists will enjoy watching the herons and might be lucky enough to see a kingfisher. There is a comfortable set of sofas and chairs grouped around the fire place and TV. An attractive glass dining table seats up to 6 people comfortably and the kitchen is well equipped with oven, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, plus ample cooking utensils and crockery. A utility room on the same floor provides a washer drier.

The accommodation sleeps up to 5 people in 3 bedrooms and comprises one double bedroom on the lower floor with a separate shower room. Upstairs there is a lovely large bedroom which has a king sized bed and en suite bathroom, with shower, bath and toilet. On the same floor there is also a single bedroom and a third bathroom.

Visitors coming to Edinburgh by car are welcome to use the property’s private garage.

The Water of Leith walkway passes the front of this development and affords wonderful walks towards the Royal Botanic Gardens and on to Leith, or Art lovers might prefer to walk in the other direction taking in the Dean Gallery and the Modern Art Gallery, both renowned for the excellence of their exhibitions. A free bus shuttle will transfer you to the National Gallery on Princes Street, or the Portrait Gallery on Queen Street.

The Lothians region

The Central Belt of Scotland offers visitors not just the sights of Edinburgh and Glasgow but also the charms of Fife and East Lothian as well as the Scottish Borders. For those with a car day trips to the Border towns of Kelso, Jedburgh and Galasheils and their environs are a possibility. Berwick on Tweed is about an hour and a half away and well worth a visit.


The Dean Gallery and The Gallery of Modern Art are both located close to the apartment and it is possible to take a very pleasant walk along the Water of Leith to reach these galleries. Alternatively a brisk walk in the other direction allows you to walk along the Water of Leith to the Royal Botanic Gardens and as far as Leith, the home of the Royal yacht Britannia, where there is a wonderful array of bars and restaurants.

"Cozy Apartment in a Convenient--and Quiet--Location"

Located next to the Water of Leith, the Hawthornbank Lane apartment is perfectly situated to be convenient to all the tourist locations, yet quiet enough for a break from the hubbub.

The main floor windows let in lots of light and offer a superb view of all sorts of historic architecture, as well as the river. There was plenty of room in the living room/sitting room for all four of us to relax and read, with a full sized dining table for our breakfasts. The kitchen is very well equipped, and with two bathrooms, there was never a tussle over who got to shower next.

The beds were very comfortable, plus there's a wonderful 'tower' bedroom well suited for a fifth guest--or as a getaway for a secluded nap.

The only drawback was that we couldn't walk the path along the water. The weekend we were there, most of the UK was being deluged with rain resulting in the walkway flooding.

The staff was very helpful, too. Met us there to show us the various idiosyncrasies of the apartment, and because no other guests were coming that Sunday, let us delay our checkout time to allow for our later train.
