BookThe Lothians / Midlothian region
The area around Edinburgh, has many places to visit and many things to do. There is a huge choice of golf courses including the famous Old Course at St Andrews (about 80 minutes drive away), Turnberry (2 hours), Gleneagles (70 minutes); in East Lothian, there are over 20 courses, all within 30 minutes drive of Edinburgh, including Muirfield and Gullane.
For those interested in outdoor activities, there are many walking trails in East Lothian and the Borders. There are lots of bird-watching opportunities, especially at St Abbs and the Isle of May (early booking is a must!), as well as the Seabird Centre in North Berwick. There are beautiful sandy beaches at the John Muir Country Park (near Dunbar) and Gullane.
If you have an interest in history, there are many castles and stately homes – too many to list here, but some highlights include Blackness Castle (where Mel Gibson’s “Hamlet” was filmed), Craigmillar Castle, Sir Walter Scott’s house, Abbotsford; the abbeys of Jedburgh and Melrose; Linlithgow Palace; Tantallon Castle; and Hopetoun House. There are also the remains of Iron Age hillforts and burial sites dating back up to 5,000 years ago.
The Edinburgh / Royal Mile area
The apartment is ideally located for exploring Edinburgh. Situated right on the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament building are both within two minutes walk. Edinburgh castle, at the top of the Royal Mile, is a few minutes walk away, as is St Giles Cathedral. All of central Edinburgh is within easy walking distance, including the National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Scotland. Most International Festival and Fringe venues are equally accessible – the Pleasance Courtyard and the Fringe Box Office are both within 10 minutes walk.
Of course, Edinburgh has many other events to offer: Science festival (April), Film Festival (June), Jazz & Blues Festival (July), the Military Tattoo, Book Festival, Mela (August) and a number of others. And don't forget the Edinburgh Marathon in May!
There are various Edinburgh Bus Tours, and these all pass very close to the apartment. Edinburgh is well-provided with public transport, and from the stop outside the apartment it is possible to get a bus direct to Ocean Terminal, where the Royal Yacht Britannia is moored.
There are numerous options for eating and drinking in the area, with a teahouse, a Starbuck’s and a pub all within 100 metres. A few minutes walk will take you to a choice of cafés, pubs (all offering food, and most offering a choice of real ales) and restaurants, offering a range of food from tea and cakes, through pizza and fajitas to sushi and award-winning Scottish cuisine.
For those who prefer to dine in, there is a small local grocer shop is also within 100 metres, and a Tesco Express supermarket is within 5 minutes walk, with a large Sainsbury supermarket about 10-15 minutes walk away.
