The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region

Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city, nestles at the heart of the Lothians. The city is set on seven hills, extinct volcanoes from which the characteristic cragginess of the area has developed. Edinburgh Castle, in the medieval Old Town, presides over the city from its position atop one of these hills. Below, lies the New Town, with its Georgian elegance. Closely alongside is the modern city where the shopping is unrivalled in Scotland and galleries, theatres, concert halls, cinemas, restaurants and bars abound.

Further afield but still only a few miles from the city centre, East Lothian is a perfect place to relax on award winning beaches, sail on the Firth of Forth or enjoy some of the world's best links golf courses. Alternatively, visit Midlothian, where, amongst other tourist attractions, you will find Rosslyn Chapel, made famous by the film The Da Vinci Code. West Lothian, known as the 'Garden of Scotland' in the 17th century, lies half way between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Here, whilst there is much of historical interest, walkers can climb hills or wander in one of the many country parks or you can simply enjoy the peace and quiet of rural life.

Edinburgh / Edinburgh New Town area

Looking eastwards along Princes Street, the view is dominated by Calton Hill where there are some striking monuments on the skyline. This cottage is situated immediatedly behind the hill, only a stone's throw from the city centre and many attractions. Designed by architect William Palyfair, the mews was built in the 1830s. Originally, these cottages housed horses and carriages on the lower floor with living quarters for the coachmen upstairs. The charm and character remain, but fortunately the accommodation you will enjoy is considerably more luxurious.

Since the late 1940s Edinburgh has become internationally renowned for the Arts starting with the International Festival and the Fringe. Now, Edinburgh is rightfully know as 'The Festival City'. The summer programme has grown with the Edinburgh Book Festival, the largest book festival in the world, the Edinburgh Film Festival, a showcase of cinematic talent and the Military Tattoo set against the magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. The Jazz Festival, starting in late July, and the Edinburgh Mela at the end of August, provide six weeks of arts and culture in the city. Together with Hogmanay, the world's most famous celebration of New Year, the Edinburgh Science Festival, a springtime treat and the Children's Festival kicking off the summer, Edinburgh is a truely inspiring city.

With the possibility to 'shop 'til you drop'; dine on internationally rated cuisine; enjoy a broad spectrum of sporting activities, not least of which are the hallowed game of golf or watching the 6 nation Rugby Internationals, what better place for a long or short city break.
