Self-catering

Home description

OUR HOLIDAY HOME in Scotland's beautiful capital city is a centrally located, fully furnished 2 bedroom self-catering apartment with spectacular views of some of Edinburgh's most famous landmarks. It is situated on Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, within easy walking distance of all the main attractions, the train station, and the airport shuttle bus terminus.
The apartment block was designed by Sir Basil Spence – arguably the most famous British architect of his generation (Coventry Cathedral is his best known work). Unusually for a property in the Old Town, the apartment has a private balcony with uninterrupted views of the classical landscape of Calton Hill, colloquially known as the 'Athens of the North. The accommodation is ideal for four people, but arrangements can be made on request for sleeping an additional guest on a folding bed in the living room.
We are full members of the Association of Scottish Self-Caterers (www.assc.co.uk)

The Central Scotland/Edinburgh region

"I had never imagined that any city in these islands could be at once so beautiful and fantastic"
- JB Priestley

The flat is centrally located in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town on the Canongate. This historic street forms part of The Royal Mile, the backbone of the city's medieval core. Winding closes, cobbled alleyways, and ancient buildings - many of which are reputed to be haunted (ours is one of the exceptions, probably because it is more recently built) - create an atmosphere quite unlike any other city in Europe. Much of The Royal Mile dates back to the Dark Ages, an area of intense and brooding character dominated by Edinburgh Castle at one end and Holyrood Palace at the other. The Canongate is at the lower end of The Royal Mile, about 200 metres from the Palace and the new Scottish Parliament.
Apart from The Queen, the flat's nearest famous resident is Adam Smith – the founder of modern economic theory. Admittedly he's been lying in the churchyard of neighbouring Canongate Kirk (visible from the balcony) for over 200 years, but we like to think that he would approve of the sound economics represented by an attractive and comfortable self-catering property which can be rented for a little over £20 per person per day in low season - and £30 in high season - in the heart of one of the world's most beautiful and fascinating cities.

Edinburgh area

We are ideally located for the majority of Edinburgh's most popular attractions and amenities (put the code EH88BP into Google Maps to see exactly where we are). The Castle is less than ten minutes by foot, The Palace of Holyroodhouse, the new Scottish Parliament, and Dynamic Earth, are just three minutes' walk. The ancient spires of the Palace (the Queen's official residence in Scotland) are visible from the second bedroom. Waverley Railway Station is less than ten minutes' walk away. Princes Street, the city's principal shopping thoroughfare, is just beyond the station, and just beyond that is the New Town - the world's greatest showpiece of Georgian architecture.
There are excellent shopping and dining facilities on the flat's doorstep, with equally good alternatives on the nearby North and South Bridges. The Museum of Edinburgh is within 100 metres of our front door, and The Royal Mile's oldest building - John Knox House - just a little further.

How to get there

* By Air: The airport bus (AIRLINK) runs every 15 minutes from Edinburgh International (bus stop is immediately outside the arrivals terminal) and the journey time is about 25 minutes to Waverley Station, less than ten minutes' walk from the flat (directions below). One way price is £3.50, return is £5.
* By Car: Follow signs for the city centre. If taking either the A1 or A8, turn south in Princes Street across North Bridge (the A7). At the first junction turn left. This is the Royal Mile (also known as the High Street) which will take you into Canongate. Drive approximately 500 metres, past Canongate Kirk on the left. A little further on the right is a branch of Starbucks. The apartment is approximately 100 metres further ahead on the left. The street entrance is next to a convenience store.
* By Taxi: Say "Canongate, towards Holyrood, 200 metres past Canongate Kirk, on the left."
* By Train: There are two main rail stations in the city, Waverley and Haymarket. The apartment is closest to Waverley. From the station, cross Market Street, walk up Cockburn Street, and turn left at the top. You will now be on the Royal Mile (also known as the High Street). Follow this down for approximately 0.5 km, past Canongate Kirk on the left. A little further on the right is a branch of Starbucks. The apartment is approximately 100 metres further ahead on the left. The street entrance is next to a convenience store.

However there is a large parking area behind the flat, for permanent residents' use only, which can be used for loading/unloading and for guest parking overnight and all day Sunday.
