Gairnshiel Cottage
About the home
Gairnshiel Cottage offers delightful recently refurbished holiday accommodation. It is situated between West Calder and Carnwath in the heart of the Scottish countryside but still within 40 minutes drive of two stunning cities – Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The views from the cottage are breathtaking: it has a wonderful position on the organic farm of South Cobbinshaw overlooking the Pentland Hills and Cobbinshaw Loch. The 310 acre loch was built in 1818 to feed the Union Canal and was also used by passing steam trains to collect water. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to wintering wildfowl and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers.
For those who enjoy the outdoors but would like to take it a bit easier, fishing on the loch can be organised for you. Nearby Harburn Golf Club is a challenging 18-hole parkland course and there are walks of all levels starting literally on your doorstep, taking in stunning scenery and fascinating history. If shopping and attractions are your thing - the designer shops of Livingston are 15 minutes away and unique little shops and galleries are found in Biggar and Peebles.
Not far away is New Lanark World Heritage Village. Surrounded by beautiful native woodland and close to the Falls of Clyde, the 200 year old cotton mill village is Scotland's most important memorial to the Industrial Revolution. Take a stroll along the riverside on one of the woodland walks and experience the outstanding beauty the Falls of Clyde - where the River Clyde cascades 85ft.
For those who like to travel a bit further afield the scenic splendours of the Borders, Perthshire, Fife, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are all within easy reach and make for great day trips.

We stayed the last week of Jan 2013, the cottage was really warm and cosy, from the minute we walked in the door, it felt so homely you could live there, the cottage was spotless and well presented, David and Lynda are wonderful people, very welcoming and friendly. We had snow, hail, rain and gale force winds but we were never cold the log burner was brilliant along with the oil fired heating. Having use of the broadband meant we could keep in touch with my family from the ipad The kitchen was equipped with all the utensils and nick naks that you would ever need and the welcome pack of organic fruit, eggs, milk and a bottle of wine was awesome. The cottage is located in a stunning part of Scotland with views out over the loch and the hills. Only thing I will point out is that part of the approach track through the farm is a bit bumpy, as it is an unmade road, but the owners are in discussion to get this rectified soon. We really enjoyed our stay, in fact so much we booked to return in September. thank you David and Lynda for a wonderful holiday. |

A very comfortable and well-appointed cottage in stunning surroundings. Peaceful, with wonderful views and starlit night skies.Driving over our 'own' causeway to reach the cottage was a special experience even if the route was very bumpy! The eggs (with date of laying pencilled on) and fruit provided on arrival were much enjoyed. There was a wide variety of places to visit in the area and Glasgow and Edinburgh were within easy reach by car or train - we found the trains from Bathgate (four an hour) and the underground system in Glasgow to be very efficient. We wanted a place in the 'back of beyond', but within easy reach of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and that's exactly what this cottage provides. Highly recommended. |
