The Lothians region
Edinburgh is an historic area which entices visitors to return time and time again. A rich heritage and historic buildings provide plenty of intrigue for those who enjoy researching the past, while the diverse range of attractions include Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The city of Edinburgh has many opportunities for shopping, with a range of large outlets and small independent shops. Edinburgh hosts many events and festivals including the spring International Science Festival, the Film Festival and the summer Festivals including the Jazz, Book and Internationally renowned Fringe Festival.
Outside of the City, the surrounding coast and countryside of West, East and Midlothian is perfect for beach or hill walks along the Pentland Hills and country parks like Beecraigs near Linlithgow. There are also many opportunities for days out including the Deep Sea Centre at North Queensferry, the Scottish Mining Museum and Hopetoun House, just 2 miles from South Queensferry.
South Queensferry is an historic town, with cobbled streets and terraced pavements winding through shops, restaurants and its own museum. The town has a number of events and festivals, including the 'Looney Dook' on New Years Day- a quick dip in the freezing Forth estuary for any brave souls; and the Ferry Fair at the beginning of June which has over 40 events including music, dance, sports, arts and exhibitions. This event dates back to 1687 when permission to hold the event was originally granted by King Charles I. The week long festival culminates in the bizarre ritual of the 'Burry Man' and the crowning of the Queen of South Queensferry, chosen from one of the three local primary schools.
The town has many interesting shops and eateries, with a range of fantastic restaurants with stunning views of the Bridges. The oldest church which is still in use in Scotland is in Queensferry- the Priory Church of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel, originally founded in 1330. The Hawes Inn, dating from the 17thC, which can be found almost under the Forth Rail bridge, features in Robert Louis Stevenson's book 'Kidnapped'. Opposite here you can catch the ferry to Inchcolm Island and Cruises on the Forth.
There are a number of Stately Homes in the area- Hopetoun House, 2 miles to the west; Dalmeny House, 2 miles to the east; and Dundas Estate, 1 mile south which includes a 9-hole golf course.
South Queensferry is an ideal touring base for many nearby tourist attractions, including historic Linlithgow and Dunfermline, both only 8 miles away. Stirling is 25 minutes drive, with its magnificent castle and shopping opportunities, and St Andrews (the home of golf) is only 40 miles to the north.

"Quiet location, excellent hospitality"
We stayed here with our 4 month old daughter for a week. The property was easy to find, not far from the main road yet in a quiet cul de sac. We were made very welcome by the owner, and there was lots of information on the local area available. The house was well equipped for our daughter, and a travel cot was provided which she took to well.
The property isn't very large, but it suited us well- there was a kitchen with breakfast bar and a living room which gave us enough space to relax and cook.
I will definitely be coming back to this property, the owners couldn't do enough for us and the location was perfect for day trips to Edinburgh and the north of Scotland.
