Northern Holland region
Until the area was drained in 1618, the Purmer was one of several unique lakes in the province of Noord-Holland, which also included the Schermer and Beemster. These three lakes had an open connection with the sea and were therefore tidal.
The Purmer was connected to what was then the Zuiderzee. Draining of the Purmerpolder was begun in 1618, and by 1622 some 26.8 square kilometres was dry land.
The Purmerpolder was put to use as farmland and little has changed since then. The patterns of roads, ditches and canals are still as they were, although the built-up areas have expanded somewhat over the years.
The Patters of roads are the same as used in Manhatten New-York. These are designed by some of the same people ho designed the system in the Schermer, Beemster and Purmer.
Noord-Holland is the part of the Netherlands with the lowest points in the country. The biggest part of Noord-Holland is below sea level.
In North-Holland there are a number of historical cities, such as, Amsterdam, Haarlem, Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Edam, Volendam, Marken, Alkmaar, Purmerend and many many more.
Each of these cities has a number of musea, shops and parcs.
The landscape in North-Holland is extremly flat. the only hills are the dikes protecting the lower areas from the water.
