"Budget is as budget does"
I stayed here because I was eager to avoid treading on the toes of my English family who, whilst they offered alternative accommodation also has two small children. It wasn't an entirely unpleasant experience but it also wasn't the best.
For starters, for some reason trip advisor didn't show the exact location of the house correctly - so where I thought it was a quick walk to a station that would take me to central london- it was actually a bus trip and a few train transfers. If you decided to go here - take the bus to stratford and the train directly into central london - close to a 45 min trip but it's pretty direct and London transport is nothing if not punctual (compared to Sydney anyway).
The room was more spacious that I expected for the price, clean linens were on the bed and the bed itself was pretty comfy. The room was clean and tidy which was also a huge plus. Oh, but bring your own towel.
The downside....The bathroom. Everything except the shower is fine - the shower is actually a converted bath...but without a shower curtain...and no latch to hold the shower head..so basically the possibility of a hands free shower is out. Also the bath itself doesn't work so don't even consider that option. It was pretty much impossible to have a shower without making a mess which - given that you're actually staying in someones home - for me, was disconcerting. There was a mop provided to (I assumme) clean up after yourself, which I did, but still, it sucks to me mopping up after a shower. Then again, you won't be getting a post shower glow from that thing - the temperature varies from stone cold to boiling hot within the turning on 1mm on the nozzle. Also - I may be picky here - but out of the majority of times I showered, the water pressure sucked.
Also make sure you get the time cerfew down before you begin your stay here - there's a blackout period between 11pm and 6am. I was unaware and had a jetlag moment, fell over and incurred the wrath of my otherwise lovely, host which resulted in a bit of awkwardness after that.
All things considered, the host was lovely - he came and got me from the bus station, Again, I don't suggest you find this place on your own as it's located in a bit of a warren of suburban houses. And also once again when I got lost on my way home.
Oh, and one more bone to pick before I go. The wifi. Now, I understand wifi can be a patchy thing in London BUT of the 6 nights I stayed there only 3 nights did the wifi work well enough to have a skype call with my folks (which is a 20 year old with a very protective mother, is a pretty important event), or access resources like my net banking.
My host eventually sorted out the issue when I brought it up with him for the second time - and it took another two days to fix, by which time I was leaving because my flight had been bumped to a day earlier.
All things considered, for the price, you can't ask for more. Although I would have happily traded a lumpy bed for wifi that worked consistently and a decent shower.
Oh and my deposit was returned in a very timely manner, but if you want it in cash be sure to give your host a few days notice.
